The Gazelle at Blackpool - now renamed Mountain are the last of them. Marwell also had a sizeable group at one time .

Yes , they are the only group left in Europe but all are females ! They are searching for a new male.

Met mhale at the Park today, so not sure who was gonna give the updates but I might as well fill in. :) The Reptile House in Encounter Village is closed for refurb and should be open again just before half term with lots of new herp species. :) I imagine some of them are the cockroaches and tarantulas in the partula snail room, along with some fab new leaf-tailed geckos. The camels have moved back to the old ankole yard for the winter, but thankfully they've got access to the paddock this time and Wacker was looking very satisfied with himself on the grass. The cheetahs were also unusually frisky today; what I think were the sisters Suki and Juba were chasing each other around the main enclosure and one even jumped into a tree on a couple of occasions.

Further to Zambar's report:

1) I was told by a volunteer that Rio the Brazilian tapir has now left the collection for Dublin Zoo (not Cotswold Wildlife Park)
2) I found out that the two Ankole cattle who recently left the collection went to Woburn Safari Park
3) The two porcupines who recently left the collection went to Shepreth Wildlife Park
4) A douroucouli (previously offshow) went to Edinburgh Zoo
5) There will be a variety of monitor lizards, spiders etc. in the Reptile House following its refurbishment
6) All three cheetahs (the male Turkus and the sisters Suki and Juba) now have access to both parts of their enclosure (the dell and the old serval enclosure) and, as Zambar stated, they were very active today

New births (since the info board was last updated) are as follows:

04/10/10 - Female greater kudu
09/10/10 - 2 mara

12/12/10

- All 3 cheetahs have moved to the bottom left-hand serval enclosure with the main enclosure empty with the first bit of the new exhibit; a horrible blu-tac splodge of Colchester rock.
- The winter regime is in full swing with nearly every hoofstock paddock closed to it's inhabitants. (Exc. Przewalskis, Camels, Sitatunga, Tapirs and Hippos)
- Rio the tapir has now left Marwell for Cotswolds.
- Lots of interesting behaviour at the snow leopards, with Irina getting snarly at Indeever when he came too close for comfort and Yasmin calling out to them on the other side of the fence.
- Encounter Village is looking even more abandoned than usual with the aviary now closed due to the cold weather. (This means that the only exhibits open are the bush walk and snail room, even the shop and kiosk were closed) However the birds could still be seen in the house, and the touracos have been joined by two von der decken's hornbills. Couldn't see the hammerkops and the madagascan teal have moved to one of the tamarin cages in the lawn. :/

I hope they are not going down that route now...:( their exhibits have always use pretty natural materials before. I'd have hoped they used materials like Whipsnade's 'Cheetah rock' exhibit.

They could've at least painted a savannah-ish reddish brown, but it's just like blu-tac as I say and looks completely out of place. :( I just hope they paint it as the new enclosure develops.

Blue-tac or Plasticine is exactly what some of the Colchester fake rock does look like e.g. in their Hyena and Mandrill exhibits. Perhaps we should wait and see what how its final appearance is at Marwell though- maybe there is some sort of more natural finish they can give it (he says hopefully..).

DARE I SAY THIS!!

But maybe Marwell like the Colchester fake rock work or maybe it's in zoo chatter's opinion tasteless charm is getting into the Marwell system too!!:rolleyes:

A few minor bits of news from today's visit to Marwell:

1) The ibis, egrets and herons have been moved out of the "Maribou Mansions" aviary due to the cold weather, leaving only the two maribous in there
2) Josef the Chapman's zebra stallion was in the paddock for a change (he is usually kept on the hardstanding)
3) The black-cheeked lovebirds have additional cover attached to their cage to help protect them from the weather
4) The egrets are sharing an enclosure with a Southern ground hornbill, between the Stanley cranes and the Demoiselle cranes
5) The fake rock in the main cheetah enclosure has now been painted, but no other work appears to have taken place with respect to creating the new enclosure

New births (since the info board was last updated) are as follows:

23/10/10 - 1 Ellipsen waterbuck
03/11/10 - Male Ellipsen waterbuck
17/11/10 - Female Ellipsen waterbuck
11/12/10 - 1 Tree shrew

I was also told that a roan antelope has been born.

can anyone tell me where exactly the new cheetah enclosure is goign to be? i was told a wgile ago that the przewalski horse paddock was the planned site but am not sure if it is still?

also, where exactly is the new entrance/shop planned for and what will become of the old shop?

and finally, will the roan antelope/kudu/gemsbok/gazzelle/wildebeest be moved over to the valley?

thanks for your help guys!!

I'm sure Zambar will be able to give more precise answers to your questions, but in the meantime ...

The new cheetah enclosure is actually going to be exactly where the current enclosure is! There was talk two years ago about building it in part of the Przewalski paddock, but that idea fell through.

I believe the new entrance/shop will be in the area where the Treetops restaurant is currently. I'm not sure what will happen to the current shop.

It is anyone's guess at the moment as to which species might eventually be moved into the valley!

Yup, as well as the current one the enclosure will also expand up to the warthogs in the old serval pens. :)

The Adaptations Project would include a new entrance, shop and education building on the site from treetops going back towards the overflow car park entrance. However last I heard I think it needs further planning applications/funding and is yet another project on a waiting list.

Seconded! :D

@mhale

You reported around June 2010 some giraffe moves were expected in during 2010. The year has now past and no developments yet (these can be fluid as we all know).

Any idea when the 2 FF rothschildi ex Continent and 1 F rothschildi ex Woburn Safari are now likely to arrive?

Cheers,

K.B.

I'm sorry to say that, in the end, the funds were not available for transportation of the giraffes. The next time I see one of the keepers on that section, I will ask if this year's budget is likely to be allocated for such moves :)
