Perth Zoo My Visit.

A while back I put out a forum about 'Things to see' at perth zoo. I came back from perth 2 weeks ago so I apologise for taking so long. Also for some reason i cannot upload photos but I will keep trying.

When I got to perth zoo I walked straight up to the islands but as I went up to them there was a female elephant on the path. There were many people that worked for the zoo standing around. I was just about to leave when I heard the word 'she was very stressed' so I am not sure what happened.

When I got to the reptile house I really liked the way it was set up but in cages I could only see one animal and with the water monitor enclosure I saw a sign that read red-eared slider but I could not see any. My favourite exhibit in the reptile house would be the lizard enclosure in the middle.

The terns in the penguin aviary were sitting on the shed the whole time I was there. The wetland aviary looked good but when I got to the croc's cage I could not see him because he was basking in the sun. I thought the Australian Outback area was pretty boring (But maybe because maybe I am getting sick of seeing kangaroos) and the aviaries next to it had all the birds in the under cover area and I could only see nicobar pigeons. Also the Australian rainforest aviary was I thought bad for visitors because all you could see were trees and all the animals were behind them.

In the Asian area there was an exhibit which I think was the Sulawesi crested macaque one was being renovated for otters. The silvery gibbons were very cool especially the younger one but the glass was very foggy which was unfortunate. The tigers were out but the exhibits weren't very rainforest looking in my eyes same with the orangutans but the orangutans did look happy which is the main thing. The Asian elephant male was standing at the gate which opened up to the females and he was there for a very long time. He was trumpeting a lot trying to get their attention. Also I tried to get pictures of the otters but there exhibit viewing area is very small and it was hard to get close when there was lots of people.

I avoided the primate area due to the amount of people but I did see the capuchins and the pygmy marmoset. The nocturanl house was very good with large spacious exhibits. The slow loris was climbing around a lot and the owlet-nightjars were sitting together which was cool. Also the bird section was all being developed into a tropical rainforest and all aviaries were destroyed except for the macaws and amazon parrots. Which I thought was disappointing. The African Savannah was well designed and all the grass was long and very savannah looking. I thought it was hard to see the lions because of the hill design but otherwis the other exhibits looked good and my favourite of the area would definately be the rhinos.

The three best things, I think were the cassowaries but I thought they could have done with an exhibit reconstruction, the tree kangaroo and the palm squirrels that were running around. As I sat down there was a small willy wagtail that would not leave my table area which was funny to watch. I thought the emu's exhibit could also be redeveloped.

All up I thought it was not as good as adelaide and melbourne zoos and the collection was quite small but everything was very nice. A bit disappointing really especially as a bird and reptile enthusiast (probably not the right word).

Thanks for the review of Perth Zoo, a collection that often gets overlooked in favour of Taronga, Melbourne and even Adelaide.
