I personally count anything as a zoo that displays live animals other than domestic/farm animals, and even then I'll count it if there are enough exotics thrown in. So, for me, that includes aquariums, aviaries, insectariums (including butterflies), reptile places, wildlife parks, marine parks, some museums and many nature centers.

Wow, there are some huge lists here. I'm doing pretty good for a 18 year old. Every time I go on vacation, I have to go to a zoo.

United States:

Disney's Animal Kingdom/ Orlando, FL
Honolulu Zoo/ Honolulu, HI
Los Angeles Zoo/ Los Angeles, CA
Living Desert/ Palm Springs, CA
National Zoo/ Washington, D.C
Phoenix Zoo/ Phoenix, AZ
San Diego Zoo/San Diego, CA
San Diego Wild Animal Park/ Escondido, CA
Santa Ana Zoo/ Santa Ana, CA
Santa Barbara Zoo/ Santa Barabara, CA
Woodland Park Zoo/ Seattle, WA

Australia:
Australia Zoo/ Beerwah, QLD
Cairns Tropical Zoo/ Cairns, QLD
Toronga Zoo/ Mosman, NSW

Then there was some sanctuary near Brisbane that we went to, but I forgot what it was called... =/ Its nothing in the gallery from what I know.

Some Additions

Rio Grande Zoo/ Albuquerque, NM
Oklahoma City Zoo/ Oklahoma City, OK
St. Louis Zoo/ St. Louis, MO
Columbus Zoo/ Columbus, OH

Also going to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY tomorrow. 20th Zoo!! I will take pictures because they are lacking in our gallery.

EDIT: Oh shoot forgot that Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, WA when I made the first post. 21 zoos I guess.

Yikes, haven't done this in a while. So the updates here are all my new zoos from August to November. I've added a separate section for the small German bird parks of the Rhine valley to avoid swamping the Germany section. These are odd places - you can read more about them in the new Zoo Grapevine if you're a member of the IZES.

Maguari,
Any more information on those bird parks? I've never heard of any of those before.

I'm not surprised, we'd never heard of them until we started looking at Zootierliste's maps!

They're all pretty much someone's back garden (often a restaurant's garden) with a surprising range of birds. The quality varied immensely - Heppenheim had a wonderful collection, Biebesheim a pretty good collection but a ramshackle site and atrocious labelling, Viernheim was very good all-round.

There are about 60 of them in the Rhine Valley area; they seem to be a local 'thing'! They're run as part of Verband Gemeinnuetziger Vogel- und Tierparks (thanks to robmv for writing an article I could check that in!), which is the Association of Non-profit Bird and Animal Parks (a few have native and/or domestic mammals, occasionally wallabies and suchlike as well). Most are free to enter but have a donation box. They're thick on the ground and so small that doing 4 or 5 in a day is quite possible. At least one fellow enthusiast did 11 zoos in a day in this region - we managed 8 - 6 of the bird parks plus Luisenpark and the SeaLife at Speyer - without feeling anything was rushed. Most of the bird parks only take 20-30 minutes at most.

I'll try to put some pictures in the Germany - Other gallery later of some of the places; Heppenheim has a gallery here: Heppenheim Bird Park Gallery

Heppenheim's fairly typical in terms of construction and layout but well above-average in terms of species diversity.

That is some list Maguari...:D

Thanks.:D

It's been a very busy year - the Germany trip was mad - all the German zoos in green above plus my second visits to Stuttgart and Cologne and we did Colchester on the way and Hamerton on the way back for 30 zoos in less than 2 weeks! (albeit about half of them very small collections!)

Thanks.:D

Haha wow thats funny I did exactly 30 zoos in europe this summer, mostly in Germany and surrounding countries in 3 weeks, but the first week I was with my girlfriend and only did 2 zoos in that time. Time for me also to post my zoo list:

As part of my introduction to Zoochat..I think sharing my personal zoo list is in order: Also I included the few national park or whale watch tours I've done

I say this not to be condescending, or pompous, but out of genuine inquiry...

These last two posters in particular, but others too before them - why haven't you been to more zoos? I'm guessing that "lizardinsanity" is based somewhere in the north-east of the USA, so why no trips to the New York zoos for example? For my entire childhood I was planning such a trip, and made it as soon as I was able. I don't understand how someone who was interested enough in zoos to post, knowledgeably, on a site such as this, wouldn't make the effort required to visit one of the world's great zoos if that zoo was on his / her doorstep. Likewise, KCZoofan, clearly you are passionate about zoos, and clearly you know your stuff, so why haven't you been to some of the other zoos in your area? Funnily enough, 20 years ago I made several visits to your home town of Olathe (not a place which features regularly on the tourist trail), and to this day I am still cross with myself for not having gone to the nearby zoo in Manhattan (Sunset Zoo) - it's a serious enough place to have cheetahs, sloth bears, giant anteaters and, most exciting of all perhaps, Chacoan peccaries. I reckon the journey from Olathe would take about two hours. And while I appreciate that the distances across a state such as Kansas are vast, how about the zoos in Garden City and Great Bend? And if neither of those zoos is perhaps worth a six hour drive - although Garden City looks rather interesting - I reckon it'd only be about 4 or 5 hours drive to Tulsa or Oklahoma, each of which has a serious zoo.

I really don't ask this question to be smug, or to suggest that someone who has been to more zoos is in any way 'better' than someone who has been to fewer, but just out of genuine curiosity.

Well, I would love to travel and see all of those zoos. I am really trying to get to go to Manhattan. The problem is, I'm 14, and I cannot drive yet. My parents do not like zoos very much, so I cannot be too pushy. I try to work at least one zoo into every vacation, but that is only 1-2 a year. My gandmother will sometimes take me to zoos such as Saint Louis, but that is only once a year. I hope that answers your question.
