A bit of a mouthful - but that is the name of my new blog, in which I shall write up 'reports' from zoo visits. For anybody that is interested in following it, here is the link: My Zoo Visits and Life Lists

Other things may be included over time, but for now I'm just experimenting and hopefully my first report about my visit to Chester will give a flavour. I look forward to adding more content as time goes on, and in particular the challenge of remembering everything from zoos I haven't visited before - unlike Chester where I know routes and animals etc like the back of my hand, they will be much more of a challenge :D

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy :).

(p.s. - if anybody has any suggestions please feel free to note them here, like I say it is early stages so I'm looking for new ideas on what to have).

I think it's a good idea, I would certainly follow it and it made me feel nostalgic too, I remember freezing in the lion enclosure making plaster casts as a junior member!

What are your life lists based on Javan Rhino? Obviously you have seen many more mammla species than those you have listed, have you just included species you have great photos of?

It is just that it isn't finished yet - I am doing all the species I have photographs of in mammals, birds and reptiles and amphibians (possibly fish and inverts at some stage). Going through all my folders of pics and I'm just updating it when I have the time to go through another folder :)

I enjoyed the layout and photos of your report- almost as good as going myself....

I do have one question- are the Bornean Orangutan females at Chester ever allowed into one of the outdoor enclosures- in fact do their indoor 'cage' enclosures connect with the outdoor ones?

They are outdoors when we see them. Their indoors area is in the old ape house which is off-show.

I was pleased to find Martha and her two grandchildren in a hammock on Saturday, pity it was immediately after I went in so the camera was steamed up!

I don't know if you can check, but do I have the right orang? I was torn on the day between Sarikei and Martha. The only Bornean orang I can ID is Leia.

@Pertinax - thanks for the compliment, glad you enjoy :)

I would guess Sarikei because she has more wrinkles & pointed nostrils. Alan's better than me at this!
Here's a handy thread where we were discussing it though, unfortunately one of the pictures disappeared (maybe in the great gallery purge!)

I was staring for ages at some of mine last night but I know it was Martha at that point because all 3 females were out & I (thought I) could tell which was Sarikei partly by Iznee's behaviour. I think I'm on the brink of a breakthrough though:)

Thanks for the link :) - I would guess Sarikei as well then in my picture, since Martha looks more different than I thought she did.

I shouldn't have said 'indoor' as I should know they are outdoor. What I meant was do the Bornean Orangs ever go in the either of the two planted 'open' outdoor enclosures?

No, these are both for the Sumatrans. I have theories as to what may happen in the future but that is all they are and I don't want to speculate anything.

Of course their current outdoors WAS planted until the orang-utans redesigned it! The other one is currently empty in an attempt to let the vegetation become better established.

I'm hoping this islands thing does include the Sumatrans and the Borneans inherit! I feel quite able to mention this hope as I have not got the foggiest idea what is actually likely to happen!

Ah well, I have trouble recognising human faces (makes watching films bewildering - is he the policeman? No he's the one we saw committing the murder!) so no reason other great apes should be any different!

Apologies for the hiatus, but I will be publishing again soon with trips to Crocodiles of the World, Cotswold Wildlife Park and another visit to Chester. Also, a new feature will be introduced :)

Hi JR,
Just made a similiar page to yours just wondering how you create a page of lists like Mammals for example just abit stuck at the moment.
Sorry for going off-topic.
