Mysore Zoo Mysore Zoo news

The zoo has recently imported a group of zebra from Ramat-Gan, Israel.

I see Polo was accorded funeral rites similar to those customary for people in India.

Absolute tripe …, esp. the mere suggestion and under the cover of anonymity.
I suspect this is just the result of ignorance and lack of familiarity with the anatomy of the species. Unlike Chimps, Gorillas do have very small genitalia and its perhaps an understandable mistake for people not conversant with the differences.

Re the size of Gorilla genitalia. At least two important founder females of the current zoo population were initially sexed as males. 1/ Achilla at Basel, first female gorilla to breeding Europe and first to rear her own young in captivity anywhere. Her second infant was the famous Jambo who became Jersey's breeding male. 2/ One of the two females Jambo joined at Jersey was Npongo, originally sexed as a male. Npongo's daughter Kahili is currently rearing her son Indigo.
While Jambo and Achilla are no longer with us, they leave many descendants.

Mysore Zoo is to acquire a pair of GOH rhinos next month. This in exchange for some hoof stock and a giraffe.

Conservation breeding programm for the Gaur to start soon :

Conservation breeding of Indian bison to start soon
The Mysuru Zoo was already well established as a breeding facility for Indian gaur. The intention is also to integrate wild captured individuals for the ex situ program.

On the side: it was mentioned the zoo will also look to expand into lion-tailed macaque breeding and looking for founders from the wild.

As always, CZA programs need to be approved by the Central Zoo Authority in New Delhi.
A very bureaucratic process.
