The Mysore zoo is to receive exotic species from two overseas zoos

From zoo Zlin in the Czech republic, in exchange for 10 spot billed pelican the zoo will receive 2 pairs of ring tailed lemur, a pair of red necked wallaby, 2 pairs of military macaws, 0.2 lesser rhea and a pair of capuchin monkey (species not named).

From Singapore zoo in exchange for a pair of sloth bear the zoo will receive 3.1 African wild dog and 2.1 meerkat.

The Hindu : Karnataka / Mysore News : Mysore zoo to have a few exotic species soon

Mysore Zoo is among the first and foremost developed zoos in India. It has earned this distinction ex aequo with Hyderabad Zoo. Consequently, it is also the zoo with the most frequent contacts to/exchanges with foreign zoos that have a cross-fertilising effect so to speak on general standards, exhibitry, animal management et al.

The onus on more info re zoos in India or Malaysia or Indonesia for that matter goes back to the courtesy we provide posters or potential sources from these regions. I am afraid to say we are not as welcoming as we might be (re. frequent derisory remarks vis a vis zoos in the less developed zoo world versus those we direct at zoos in the developed world).

I may frequently criticise zoos in India, but I remain convinced that with current levels of entry fees, current restricted zoo funding from State and Federals and the ever present bureacracy in animal exchanges, the Indian zoos segment will continue to struggle towards progress. However, us just criticising without putting anything back in (the armchair syndrome) is not helping either.

I do advocate more even-handed posting (while not ignoring the down-sides, also looking at the positives and the importance of a zoo in a given country) and also would like to see from our major developed zoos similar support structures for Indian zoos (or for that matter for Malaysian/Indonesian/Thai + for African zoos) appearing as they already exist between EEP-ALPZA (and SSP-Latin America) or EEP-EURAZA region (E.European zoo support network). That would be a major step forward and allow cross benefits to both sides of the equation (an exchange of ideas, funding, animals ..., the options are myriad!!!).

After all the central issue is if we do not have zoos how can a big portion of our human world relate to animals, plants and the environment anyhow?Zoos perform an even more important role in the less developed world than in the developed world.

Mysore zoo has received from the Madras crocodile bank Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), Dwarf Caiman (Paloesuchus palpebrosus) and African Slender Snouted Crocodile (Mecistops cataphractus).
This brings the collection of crocodilians up to 5 species.

Mysore zoo has received a pair of African buffalo. The male buffalo, Rajan is 12 years old and was originally a resident of the National Zoological Park, New Delhi until it was transferred to Thiruvananthapuram Zoo in 2004. Bindu, the female buffalo is aged 11 years old and was born at Thiruvanathapuram Zoo. The pair has been sent to the Mysore Zoo in exchange of a pair of Indian Gaur and a pair of Red Jungle Fowl which have been sent to the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo.

Do you know which Czech Zoo. Only Zlin-Lesna has all 3 species, but black-neched swans aren't too hard to get (and without that species several other options arise).

It is Zlin-Lesna. They need to get rid of their capuchin monkeys because the old monkey house should be reconstructed into a cownose ray touch-pool.

The zoo has also received 5 anacondas from the national zoo of Sri Lanka

The Hindu : States / Karnataka : Zoo attracts record number of visitors
Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as Mysore zoo, registered a record footfall of 30,33,032 visitors during the financial year 2011-12, the highest since its inception.

“This figure does not include visitors who came the zoo as part of the zoo in-reach programme, and children under the age of 12 who got free entry on national holidays such as Independence Day and Republic Day and those who came for educational programmes,” Executive Director of the zoo B.P. Ravi said.

In 2010-11, the zoo had attracted 26,69,663 visitors.

Revenue

The zoo's revenue increased in 2011-12 to Rs. 14.52 crore from Rs. 9.56 crore the previous year.

The zoo made a record gate collection of Rs. 11,70,225 on October 6, 2011, when 29,352 visitors came to the zoo, he said.

Attractions

The reason for the substantial increase in the number of visitors, according to Mr. Ravi, is the addition of rare, exotic and endangered species such as the scarlet ibis, black-necked swan and capuchin monkeys through animal exchange programme.

“Successful captive breeding of animals such as wild dog, Indian grey wolf, tiger and cheetah and many species of birds has also attracted animal lovers to the zoo. Arrival of green anacondas from Sri Lanka and their housing for the first time in an Indian zoo also added to the excitement of animal lovers,” he said.

Also, there was emphasis on ensuring hygiene, enclosure enrichment, landscaping and beautification, and development activities for providing visitor-friendly facilities., he said.

Training

The zoo is organising training for final year B.Sc. (Forestry) students of the College of Forestry, Ponnampet, from April 8 to 14 here. The programme is designed to understand the importance of conservation education, captive breeding research, and rescue and rehabilitation.

B.U. Chengappa, retired Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, will inaugurate the training programme on April 8 at 11 a.m. at the zoo. M. Nanjundaswamy, chairman, Zoo Authority of Karnataka, will preside over the function and R.S. Suresh, member-secretary, Zoo Authority of Karnataka, will be present.

MYSORE: ZAK council on Tuesday gave permission for exchange of animals between Mysore zoo and other Indian and international zoos with pending approval from central zoo authority of India.

Mysore zoo is likely to get nine exotic species of birds/animals from Zoo Zlin Czech Republic in exchange for spotted pelican and sloth bear. ZAK chairman Nanjundaswamy told TOI that Zoo Zlin authorities will be sparing greater flamingo, scarlet macaw and ring-tailed lemur to Mysore zoo.

Visited the Mysore Zoo last week, will write a proper review later when I have the chance, but I admit, I was very impressed by the grounds and size/standard of (almost all) the enclosures.
