This really has been a black week for Amersfoort Zoo. Last week one of the younger giraffes had to be euthanized because of a broken leg (and post-mortem: problems with hips and knees) and now the news is that two chimps have passed away within a couple of days.
Last week Cees, 29 and born and raised in Amersfoort, was transported to Munich last week to become the new leader. When they left him he was healthy but after three days he became ill and had to be euthanized because of the pain he was having.
Sepp, the new leader in Amersfoort, was found dead on Monday morning without any indication of what was wrong.
The people working at the zoo are devistated by these events.
As the possibility is there that the two deaths were connected, further investigations are being conducted at the universities of Utrecht and Göttingen.
