Chester Zoo Mystery ungulate

Mark my words: it's going to be a Saola. Otherwise, one of those rare & exclusive African Dwarf Goats-probably from an "obscure Czech zoo"...;)

I've already mentioned a mixed saola/kouprey exhibit, perhaps with some Cat Ba langurs and a pair of Vietnamese rhinos...

My money is on pygmy hogs as the zoo is involved in the in situ project and I think numbers may have built up enough to contemplate transferring some of them to zoos. And Chester has been getting into pigs a bit more in recent years. This is just a guess though.

Apologies to Czech friends, no offence intended. I'm just jealous of your takins and Northern White rhinos etc etc.

That would be zoogeographically brilliant, if they were kept with the Indian rhinos. Then we would just need hispid hares to complete the set ;)

would it be a good idea mixing saola and kouprey? Personally I'd house them separately in case of interspecific male conflict, and I suspect their habitat requirements would be quite different.

Since, we are prone to all kinds of speculation ... I will have my revenge here! ;) I will put all my money on the scoopidoosaurus ..... instead. By barmy people, that is an unique relict herbivore from the Dinosaur Age and only surfaces every few thousand years from its cave-like lifestyle .....

No, seriously ... I am quite happy to wait it out and see what Chester Zoo will come up with. I am sure it will somehow be complimentary to their in situ conservation programmes overseas ...!!! :D

Didn't someone guess it as one of the pairs of white tailed gnu from Newquay?

Zoomania, i have a picture of you in my head just strolling down the fruit and veg aisle at tesco, and shouting out "BONTEBOK"!, with bemused shoppers around you, and you with that all knowing grin on your face.

I thought one of the "clues" was that is wasn't kept in Europe.

i believe the Newquay gnu were sourced from a Polish zoo, which would rule them out as the mystery animal

I haven't been following this properly, I just made a quote from another thread. But I am now curious...

How about Kongoli or Cape Hartebeest?Twycross had one when it first opened in 1963 but don't know whether any exhibited in Britain since then.

I heard today that the zoo's application to import scoopidoosaurus was turned down by a jobsworth at DEFRA, who said, 'if it ain't on my list, it don't enter the UK.'

Shame, they're awesome

This thread has been running longer than an 'Eastenders' storyline...

Can't anyone enlighten us on when it is going to be revealed what species this is? Its setting itself up for an anticlimax.:(
