Mystic Aquarium Mystic Aquarium News

Mystic currently has several rescue species of seal on exhibit including Grey and Harp seal. Hasn’t been publicly announced anywhere but for those interested go soon and there’s a good chance you can see them next to the new playground. Also means Mystic currently has seven species of pinniped on exhibit.

Where is the new playground? I'm going next week!

Are any of the animals in the rescue center pools?

Or do you mean in the large holding pools by the penguins?

They are in the seal rehab center after wetlands (so not the large penguin rehab pool). It’s across from what was originally the parakeet aviary but is now a playground area. Hugs the wall of the aquarium.

That's what I was hoping for, thanks!

Are there any Harp that are visible? The animal in your photo looks like a Grey but it's hard to tell.

Is the Harp what's in the pool with the window?

No that’s a grey. The harp is in the icu in the back but I had no trouble seeing him cause he’d jump and poke his head out frequently. Best time is probably around 1PM cause that’s when they do all the feedings so the seals constantly pop their heads out

On August 4th, the aquarium announced they have rehabilitated and released (2.0) grey seals named Nauset and Hudson back into the wild.

Also, the aquarium has transferred the harp seals to another facility during the week of July 31st - August 6th, according to @Nicholas LionRider

Which facility? SeaWorld California is the only facility I know of for sure that has non-releasable harp seals. A unique species to be held in captivity!

They didn't say they weren't releasable. Aquarium of Quebec has harps.

Went to the aquarium today and was happy to see the 3 original belugas and 2 healthy ones that came from Marineland were sharing the whole tank together. The sick one is still in behind the scenes in a tank near the penguins.

It wasn’t posted here yet but this article provides further details on the belugas who passed. Regrettably Havana’s was storage disease- a genetic issue likely inherited from her mother as a sibling also had a metabolic disorder.
They also provide an update on Jetta as well.
