Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens Nagoya - Higashiyama Zoo

I am surprised I missed out on this news but better late than never I guess. The zoo’s 54 year old Sumatran Orangutan Neo has passed away on March 14th. She is one of the zoo’s oldest animals and she was the only orangutan there at the time.

I hadn’t found any news or plans about any new orangs (let alone Sumatran orangutans which are rarer than Borneans in Japan) to replace Neo. The orangutan enclosure was just opened July last year.

The zoo has announced revealed some plans of a savanna area and is conducting a survey regarding it. The plan is to have exhibits for lions, hyenas (probably spotted), giraffes, zebras, and hippopotami (both pygmy and common).

This project will likely start after two other projects that have not been reported on this thread are completed: a new snow leopard and Pallas’s cat exhibit next to the brown bear enclosure. The other exhibit will be for Malayan tapirs and Komodo dragons located next to the elephant complex. I only found out about this after checking the current map.

I mentioned on another thread that an animal broker in Japan has imported multiple North American porcupines. Turns out a pair of the animals has been sold to Higashiyama. On a personal note I find it odd that the zoo had to pay a broker and breeder for an animal that seems to be otherwise commonly bred in western zoos.

How could this Japanese zoo actually source a pair of zoo-bred porcupines? There is no studbook keeper to call and inquire about availability - North America nor Europe has any sort of official breeding program for the species. Non-EAZA (non-AZA) staff doesnt have password to access online surplus/wanted list of those two organisations for quick search. So Higashiyama zoo would need to contact a foreign zoo after zoo directly and ask them. Most US and European zoos will not entertain the ordeal of prepairing an animal for export to overseas (without a very good incentive) anyway. And those who would, might not be allowed by Japan with its strict import rules.

I understand why the zoo decided to just buy from a local broker. Far less headache.

The 2.3 Tsushima leopard cats were born in 9th if May. So far all kittens are still alive

0.1 Sumatran tiger Damai has been on display since July 23.

As stated by @Toki in a media post, the zoo will display orangutans in the future again. I’m not sure if it’s going to be Sumatran or Bornean.
Four years ago, during a SEAZA workshop, there were plans to transfer a male Sumatran orangutan named Satria from Singapore Zoo to pair with Aki. However, the plan might have been halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with Aki's passing, the likelihood of this transfer happening seems low. Higashiyama Zoo is the coordinator for the two species of orangutans under JAZA, and I would be deeply disappointed if they decided to abandon the Sumatran orangutan to start keeping the Bornean species instead. The opening of the Asian Tropical Rainforest area last year also marked the signing of a cooperation agreement with Taman Safari, which raises hopes for a fruitful relationship with Indonesia.

I hate to play pretend studbook keeper but doesn’t Ichikawa zoo have young orangutans that can be paired up? The females Lilly/Rirī and Popo are valuable since their father Īban/Ivan and late mother Sūmī were founders donated from Medan City.

The zoo has announced that starting from the first of October, 1.0 Leaf and 0.1 Kaede will be in display in the America Zone. This species is making a return after a three year absence.

Chapultepec zoo recieved 5 Humboldt penguins from Nagoya zoo in exchange for 5 volcano rabbits. The newly opened Acuario Michin in northern Mexico City has 5 Humboldt penguins. I do not know their source. Acuario Inbursa still has gentoo and chinstrap penguins. So Mexico City now has 3 institutions with penguins.
Did the volcano rabbits end up happening? It seems the trade went through on the penguin side?
