Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens Nagoya - Higashiyama Zoo

In last year's report, it was mentioned that a male aardvark was purchased from an animal dealer with the intention of being donated to Singapore and is now being kept at Higashiyama Zoo. I have trouble expressing my feelings clearly, but I can't help but feel uneasy about the practice of purchasing wild animals just for exchange programs or donations. It somehow feels like a questionable or uncool thing to do. Perhaps this comes across as harsh, but I truly hope the male aardvark will have a good life in Singapore's wonderful enclosure.
 
I'll visit this zoo next May. I've read the whole thread and found it very helpful, as well as other posts on the forum. I now know that it's advisable to visit the nocturnal animal house (I assume it's the same building where the reptiles are) from 9-10am because the lights are on, and a full day visit is recommended to be able to see everything, especially the fish. Do you have any other tips that could help me? Anything I should not miss?

I think you got the points!

Just one thing. Early May in Japan is locally known as the "Golden Week", with a few public holidays in a row. It is said to be the most crowded week to travel in Japan, and this includes zoos. If possible, I'll recommend you to avoid those dates.

It's late, I already have everything booked and I will be traveling from April 28th to May 17th...

*only two on display. There’s at least one breeder that has held and bred honey badgers in Japan.

Fran/Flan was brought to Japan from Africa (the zoo does not specify if he is from the wild or a captive setting) in April 2004. (Edit: This makes him at least 19 years old, but given his age during his arrival wasn’t mentioned by the zoo, Flan might have passed at least 20 years.) He was showing signs of sickness since February 24.

In other news, male koala Shishio is planned to be sent to Hirakawa Zoo in March 17.

How many Tsushima field mice do they hold? Have they had some breeding success with this island species at Higashiyama Zoo?

The other honey badger outside Higashiyama on display is at the horrid North Safari Sapporo, so that honey badger might be exhibited in another zoo, hopefully a safari park.
 
21 years old male giant anteater Savio died on April 14th.

A baby mandril was born on April 15 to mother Niko and father Manjuurou.

A north American porcupine was born to first-time mother Kaede and father leaf on April 19th. The vets tried hand rearing the baby in April 30th but the baby passed on.

Female bald eagle Kitty (estimated to be forty years old) died due to kidney failure on May 20th. The zoo announced on May 8th that another bald eagle San/Sun will be arriving from Adventure World.

The zoo plans to send female rockhopper penguin (taxa not specified) Otobi to Adventure World. Today is the scheduled transfer date. With this transfer Higashiyama zoo no longer displays rockhopper penguins.

Higashiyama Zoo will be welcoming sibling Tiger pair Alona(1.0) and Makmur(0.1). The zoo already keeps one male tiger.

During my visit, I was surprised to see that the volcano rabbit facilities were still visible and that there seemed to be plans to reoccupy them. Are there any plans to reinstate the species in the near future?
