Name One Live Birth You've Witnessed At A Zoo

In my many years of zoo visits, I can only bring to mind one eyewitness birth. That was of a baby Springbok back in the 1970s, at the Los Angeles Zoo. Maybe many of you have been more fortunate. I guess we're looking for the experiences of the average zoo goer, since keepers would probably experience live births on a regular basis. But feel free to share with us as well keepers.

I was a couple minutes late for a Grevy's zebra foal, but we watched him for a long time and saw his first steps.

I had luck, I could see twice a birth of a dromedary, then a gnu, a guanaco and a twin birth of maras and a reindeer.

A Pudu at Marwell several years back. Watched the last few minutes of birth and then the mother cleaning the calf.

I didn't see the birth, but I got to see a 3-banded Armadillo carry its newborn baby around the exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo.

i saw the persian leopard give birth at marwell (persian leopard are no-longer kept at marwell)

I saw a Dromedary give birth in the mid 1990s (1996?) at African Lion Safari in Cambridge, Ontario. I did see a Reindeer born ten minutes old at the Toronto Zoo.

I think I saw a Giraffe give birth at Whipsnade years ago.

A sulewesi crested macaque (i think) at Bristol years ago... still had its umbillical chord attached.

Missed the birth itself, but saw a newly born mara at Marwell still damp and attached to the ambilical cord.

As a keeper I guess I don't count but we actually saw an Eastern grey kangaroo give birth a few years ago--not something that even keepers often see!

I think I saw a Giraffe give birth at Whipsnade years ago.

You think???

How could you not be sure you saw a giraffe giving birth????

LOL

I was 5, maybe 6 at the time :p Can't really remember it but I'm sure my parents told me I saw it.

Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep. The baby was coming out head first and correct me if I'm wrong, but it usually comes out with it's back legs first. The mother was having a difficult time and it looked like the baby wasn't budging at all the time I was there observing it. Eventually the baby did come out and has been fine ever since. I felt bad for her because the male big horn sheep decided to invest and decided to head butt her as she was going through this process.

A bottle nose dolphin calf born in 2008 and a couple of southern stingray pups at the National Aquarium in Baltimore.

I was looking at a llama herd in the Lee Richerdson Zoo for a while when suddenly a mother suddenly started giving birth. I was really young so at first I thought she was using the rest room but then I saw a head of an animal pop out. It took such a long time for her baby to come out but after a while finally came out.

How about a pair of ZooChatters? On the 11th July Gentle Lemur and I just missed one sitatunga birth (by five minutes or so) and then witnessed another one begin.

i've seen some cheetah cubs when i went to krugar national park last summer. and i have seen the birth of a giraffe in the massai mara.
