Marwell is once again letting the public vote for the names of new babies, and now it's for the new pygmy hippo, born on the 13th November to Wendy. The options are Loki, Kadima, Zimmi and Lola, I myself voting for the first one. You can vote here.

hmmm lola... i think whipsnade had a hippo called lola!

they seem to have great sucsess with thier hippos must be their third in five years...

dalek - am i right that its just the pair and the new baby at marwell so far, or is the last offspring still there?

The previous calf, now adult of course, was still there as of the 16th November when I last visted, kept seperate. Now Marwell will be trying to move her on.

i dont know much about marwells hippos! are the male and female always kept seperate unless they want them to mate?

Yes, as pygmy hippos are generally very solitary and would get aggresive if kept together for too long.

ah right, so im guessing its mum and baby in one pool, dad in the next and the other offspring in the last?

Yup, much more managed now that there aren't any more tapirs in the SAMH.

Yeah, try answering things in one post. And I have answered all but one of yours beforehand.

Yes , thats correct , Wendy and offspring are in the first pool , Antone in the centre and Sirana in the far right. She is the second born female to this pair , they have now had three female calves in a row. Zupu.

is there any plans to move sirana to another collection?

thanks for that

Sirana will be moved to another collection as soon as possible, so that there will be a free pool once the new calf is too old to stay with Mum.

I voted for Kadina, I like the way it runs off the tongue I matches kinda a hippo theme.

I suppose in a way it fits with Hazina, the okapi calf born recentley, but Loko's still fixing me!

Thanks zupu, I think that it is a graceful name to fit a girl, loko, ( just in my opinion) sounds bold, and if it were a boy I would of chosen that. :)

I have also voted for Kadina. Sounds like a nice little hippo name, it may have just been me but they usually have meanings of the names in votes like this or do I miss it?

Also the last calf moving to bristol, is this for a breeding situation or temproary home so they have room for the new calf, before moving the older calf off to a breeding situation?

Its also the name of an old fashioned Coffee House I used to know. Probably a coincidence but maybe it means 'Coffee'...

Taun - As I said, this is so there is a free pool for the calf once she is too old to stay with Wendy. Infact fairly recentley the older calf, Sirana, had teeth marks from where Wendy had been biting her due to agression, showing she needed to be moved to the third pool before her age allowed even more solitary instincts kick in from her mother. Marwell's only got three pools per hippo, and the move to Bristol allows the circuit to continue like this as well as being able to breed from Sirana.

I think Bristol has two. I think one probably died if they're taking on another, they don't have room for any more than two!
I've never seen the two hippos at Bristol together actually, they've always been seperated. Have they ever bred them?
