Nashville Zoo Nashville Zoo News

Rosie and Hadari, two of the zoo's former elephants, passed away recently at The Elephant Sanctuary.

In regards to the new exhibits:

- Anyone have an idea of how large that spider monkey exhibit is?
- Does anyone know if any North American zoos hold viscachas? Will this be a unique species at Nashville?
- Which former elephant habitat? Are the elephants still coming back?

As far as I know, the rhinos are taking the habitat the elephants used to have but an entirely new elephant exhibit will be built on the property.

Any idea when are White Rhinos going to debut and where are they from?
The 2015 press release stated as follows:
quote
"Three male white rhinoceros will be arriving from an animal reserve in Florida within the next few months. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) for rhinos has identified these males as candidates for breeding.

“These guys will be a valuable start for our rhino collection,” said Zoo Mammal Curator Lanny Brown. “The AZA recognizes the value these males bring to the captive breeding program which means our Zoo will be an attractive location for the addition of females down the road.”

As of September 2016 - World Rhino Day - 2 male rhinos would come in shortly.

"Celebrate World Rhino Day on September 22
As Nashville Zoo prepares for the upcoming opening of the new white rhino exhibit, we also celebrate and recognize World Rhino Day! Later this year, we will welcome a pair of male white rhinos into the former elephant habitat. In the future, the Zoo plans to import a group of female white rhinos with plans to breed the group as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan."

More recently, some statements indicate that they plan on importing 4 female captive white rhino direct from South Africa.

Spider monkey exhibit looks really nice. My fear though is that the foliage (mostly bamboo?) will get stripped in short order.
