National Aquarium in Baltimore National Aquarium, Baltimore Updates and Events

Probably only representatives of sandstone long-neck turtles outside Australia apparently.
Is this species bred more often in Australia or is it a rarity too there?
They believe that they are the only ones hatched in a zoo or aquarium, so I would assume that means that they're rare in Australia, too.

Is that how long it's been since it was closed for ages?

I'm trying to remember how long it was closed for...I thought only the upper deck was closed for a month or two but visitors could still access the understory pathway all the way through to Hidden Life. I know they've done escalator work as well, but guests were routed up the stairwell to see the exhibit too. I seriously don't remember the exhibit ever being closed closed, but I could be wrong.

The enormous cost (almost $8 million) is staggering. Someone could build a moderately-sized gorilla exhibit for that price! :p

It’s not the easiest thing to replace given its location and height off the ground. I know the NC Zoo is planning to soon replace the panels in its aviary. That’ll cost about 1/4 this price.

Article addressing future projects at the Aquarium including: the new glass pyramid, floating wetlands, dolphin sanctuary, main aquarium building renovations, and future conservation projects.

Additionally, Aquarium CEO John Racanelli has said the open secret out loud - there won't be any Aquarium opening in DC. Short of a billionaire donor, it's not cost effective for such a facility.

As uncomfortable as I am about the long-term welfare of cetaceans in human care, we can all agree that the 'dolphin sanctuary isn't going to happen right? I say that as a local. Sure they may see pressure to move them, but eve NA moves them to seaworld or another park, i highly doubt they'd get much flack

Blacktip Reef: Zuri has officially arrived on exhibit and has taken up residency along with fellow zebra shark, Zoe. https://aqua.org/stories/2021-10-15-introducing-zuri-the-zebra-shark

North Atlantic to the Pacific: All three exhibits (Sea Cliffs, Kelp Forest, and Pacific Coral Reef) are closed as new exhibit signage and graphics are installed on the visitor facing side. The graphics will have the same style and theme as the recently renovated Level 2 and Level 3 galleries with animal IDs on screens and infographic display panels.

Surviving Though Adaptation: The Occupying exhibit is closed as a new LSS system is installed and new coral display is constructed.
