It's an exciting time for the National Aviary - a renovation of the Tropical Rainforest is underway for the first time since it was built in 1952! You can still see popular birds from the Tropical Rainforest in other habitats, and catch a weekend appearance from colorful parrots. The habitat will remain open during the renovation, so you can watch the exciting transformation before your eyes!

Aviary undergoing $1.25M tropical rainforest renovation

National Aviary's tropical rainforest habitat is getting a major facelift.
The North Side facility's oldest room is seeing an update that will include the replacement of 3,146 panes of glass, construction of a new 15-foot waterfall and installation of new trees and plants, perches and other enhancements, according to a news release.
The aviary is partnering with architectural firm Vitro Glass to replace the panes with bird-friendly, acid-etched finish, the release said.
Collaborating with ornithological experts, the Cheswick-based company chose the glass to protect the birds inside the exhibit, but also prevent outside birds of prey from choosing the birds on exhibit as their next meal, according to a company spokeswoman. Dlubak Specialty Glass in Blairsville fabricated the glass, the spokeswoman said.
This is the first renovation for the tropical rainforest exhibit, which opened in 1952, according to the news release.

HATCHINGS: One of our three pairs of Black-faced ibis laid an egg in February, and the chick fledged late March, making the National Aviary the first in North America zoo to hatch one of this species since 1996. Before our breeding program was established in 2016 there were only three birds in the country, and there are now 16!
ACQUISITIONS: A female Scaly-sided Merganser joins the current Male and Female in the Wetlands Area.

One Penguin chick is in window. Only a month and a half and ginormous! Burrowing owl chicks are in breeding center. The two blue throated macaws are on exhibit with the senior crowned pigeons in canary’s call. Two new Pygmy geese are calling TF home. Bob the keel billed toucan is back in cloud forest
Visited aviary today-covering the windows of the rhinoceros hornbill exhibit were 3 signs, one said coming soon January 2019, one had a picture of an Andean cock of the rock, and the other had a picture of a capuchinbird...not sure what this means, though.
