Whitetail Deer? Found in more states at least. And Bison are basically big cattle nowdays.

Antilocapridae is the only family of mammals completely indigenous to North America, and is therefor the most important mammal we have from an evolutionary standpoint.

Not that I'm suggesting you should choose a rodent as National Mammal, though personally I quite like both pocket gophers (Geomyidae) and the mountain beaver (Aplodontiidae)
