Bristol Zoo (Closed) National Wildlife Conservation Park

Bristol are still negotiating final planning permission for the project , so would not be able to start yet even should the money be available .

"AN APPLICATION to build the country’s first National Wildlife Conservation Park (NWCP) has won the unanimous support of planning bosses."

"The first National Wildlife Conservation Park". Eh? This is going to be a zoo, run on the same conservation-driven lines as most other serious zoos in the UK. How come this is being labelled as "the first"? Nonsense.

"Our plans for the site, on the northern outskirts of Bristol, involve creating a 55-hectare Park, which will be the first conservation-led animal visitor attraction of its kind in the UK"

I suppose it really depends on what "of its kind" means. I think Durrell, at the very least, might take up issue with this statement!

I suppose we can't hold it against Bristol for trying to put such a spin on it.

having read the article is planned area 55 acres or 55 hectares?

If 55 acres this really doesn't sound that large for example whipsnade is 10times bigger, chester 111acres, even london zoo is 36 acres.

55 hectares. It'll be about 136 acres, on a similar size to Chester and Marwell therefore.

I find it hard to go nitpicking; see this as a positive step towards the development of a truly world class collection. :)

so just poor reporting.

I agree, this kind of story really annoys me, I get that they need to get support for the project but it's hardly ground-breaking, it's just a modern zoo like many others.

It also says:

"The park would offer a new approach to conservation by allowing visitors to see animals in surroundings close to their real habitat. "

Wow, I can't believe no one ever thought of this before... (that's sarcasm by the way). I guess Whipsnade, Chester, London Zoo, Edinburgh Zoo, Marwell, Durrell, Highland Wildlife Park and many others are just roadside menageries...

Maybe this isn't my most constructive post ever but I hate stupid press releases written for lazy reporters and even more stupid readers!

If this Park goes ahead, I think you can expect to see some very special and top quality exhibits. Possibly along the lines of the excellent and immersive 'Seals & Coasts' at Bristol Zoo. So if all the exhibits at this new Park are of this type, rather than intermingled with the usual layout of Paddocks and enclosures visitor walk around, then, yes, perhaps it will be unique in its way.

The 'Conservation Park' tag is just one way they are trying to make it look different from other collections in advance. Whether it really will be remains to be seen.

according to pics of signs in the gallery posted by zoogiraffe, the prodject name is called the NWCP and the park name is yet to be decided

Did you notice how the projected Opening Date has now slipped back FIVE years- to 2017 according to this article... Hardly surprising given the delays and recession/fundraising problems:(

I having trouble believing that they can do all that for 70 million given how much its costing Chester to do Heart of Africa.

Unlikely. it's on hold. they're doing bushcraft education there now as well as the old gardening and holding stuff.

As a (hopefully!) future zookeeper, I have been regularly checking the website and looking over the plans with great interest and excitement as I think the plans look amazing. Unfortunately I haven't seen anything change except the addition of Bryan Carroll to the 'About the Team' page.

I really hope this project does manage to get started as it looks like it would be a fantastic place to work and visit. I guess we'll have to keep our fingers crossed, after all, better late than never!
