Looks like the National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra is going to be expanding...

From abc.net.au:

Zoo expansion assessments missing

The ACT Greens say the territory Government has not been able to locate the environmental assessments relating to its approval to expand the National Zoo.

The Government has given its in-principle support for the zoo to take over former forest land adjacent to the Tuggeranong Parkway.

Greens MLA Deb Foskey says at the announcement in January, the Government indicated it had studied the environmental impacts but those reports now cannot be found.

A spokesman for Tourism Minister Ted Quinlan says the reports were compiled by the National Capital Authority in a public process completed last year.

Think of the National Zoo and Aquarium x 5 and that's how big it will be in a few years time. Should be great for the giraffe's batchelor pad :P

The statement by Tinsdale that most parts of the zoo are unprofitable is weird. Is he suggesting that the existing products the zoo sells (which can be grouped into admission, special experiences, food and beverage and merchandise) don't make money? If so, he will have trouble securing finance for his expansion plans. If he is simply saying that most of the zoo grounds don't make money, then that's just a plain bizarre way of looking at a zoo business. Presumably he doesn't have animals that he doesn't think people want to see, so all animals in the collection will be contributing to getting people through the gate.

Perhaps he means the expansion wouldn't be viable without the accommodation. Not the first time a reporter has misinterpreted what is being said.
