Native Mammals in Australian Zoos

Australian Sealion Neophoca cinerea
Rare – Adelaide Zoo, Pet Porpoise Pool (Dolphin Marine Magic), Sea World Gold Coast, Taronga Zoo,

Adelaide Zoo no longer has Australian sea lion:

From Zoos SA’s socials:

It’s with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Ady, Adelaide Zoo’s beloved Australian Sea Lion. As one of the oldest Australian Sea Lion in the region at 28 years old, and having well surpassed the average lifespan of her species at 15 in the wild and 20 in human care, Ady’s health has been closely monitored for some time.

On Monday, Ady’s dedicated keepers observed signs of discomfort, and our expert veterinary team conducted a thorough health check under anaesthetic which identified significant gastrointestinal and abdominal issues. Adelaide Zoo’s expert animal management team agreed that it was time to let Ady pass gently. She was euthanised late on Monday afternoon.

Dingo have returned to Perth Zoo:

From socials:

We're so excited to share that we've welcomed two dingo puppies! The 10-week old sibling pair arrived from Victoria in recent weeks. For now, the duo will be living behind-the-scenes in our vet department while they acclimatise to their new home.

Many of you would remember we said sad goodbyes to our beautiful senior dingoes Daku and Mirri over the last couple of years. They inspired a love for the species in all of us, and now these little pups will create a whole new generation of dingo lovers

Common – Billabong Sanctuary, Billabong Zoo, Currumbin Sanctuary, David Fleay Wildlife Park, Dreamworld, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Oakvale Wildlife Park, Rainforestation Nature Park, Snakes Downunder, Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre, Wildlife Habitat, Wildlife HQ.

Southern Brown Bandicoot Isoodon obesulus
Rare – Adelaide Zoo, Caversham Wildlife Park, Cleland Wildlife Park, East Coast Natureworld, Softfoot Sanctuary
(Note that this species has been split into two species, eastern obesulus and western fusciventer, and the zoos generally do not specify which are held. Generally western zoos (e.g. Caversham) would hold the western species while eastern zoos (e.g. Cleland) would hold the eastern species).
Perth Zoo now have Quenda - reported on their FB page.

-Spectacled Flying Fox Pteropus conspicillatus
Rare – Amazement Farm and Fun Park, Caversham Wildlife Park, Featherdale Wildlife Park, Hunter Valley Zoo, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Wildlife Habitat
Just realised that both Featherdale and Hunter Valley are still on the list for Spectacled Flying Fox. Neither still hold the species.

A few updates from the Zoos SA Annual Report 2024-2025: ....
  • Other native births - two Tasmanian Devils, five Greater Bilbies, two Brush-tailed Bettongs, three Yellow-footed Rock-Wallabies and twelve Greater Stick-nest Rats .....
  • Boodie Bettongia lesueur (p. 51) is now listed as part of the Zoo SA collection. It wasn’t specified if this species is housed at Monarto or Adelaide.

Thanks for sharing all the news in the report @WhistlingKite24 , was great to read it all detailed out about their news and achievements over those twelve months. (Will only digress for this sentence from the native mammals relevence here, but with the four cheetahs who were transferred from Monarto last fiscal year, think you and other members and me were successful with covering the four individuals who were over the time - just in relation to cheetah thread, but back on track).

Boodies re: With boodie(s) in the Zoos SA collection, from this facebook post by Monarto from 20 August this year about a Nibblet the boodie, looks to be Monarto based on their profile posting about.
