San Diego Zoo New "Africa Rocks" complex at San Diego Zoo

What will happen to the Yellow footed rock wallabies, Chacoan peccaries, Desert bighorn sheep, and Siberian musk deer that are currently in Cat and Dog Canyon ?

The exhibits that held the Yellow footed rock wallabies, Desert bighorn sheep, and Siberian musk deer already have fences in front of them. I don't know where the animals went. The Chacoan peccaries are still in their exhibit but the warthogs that were next to them are gone.

Thank you Betsy!
My theories regarding the placement of the Yellow footed rock wallabies, Desert bighorn sheep, Siberian musk deer, and Common warthogs are one of the following things

A. They are off exhibit at the zoo
B. They are at the Wild Animal Park (Probably off exhibit)
or
C. They are in the hands of an animal dealer in the private sector

To back up theory C. I strongly suggest that you guys read Safari Park's posts they are VERY interesting, VERY informative, and a wealth of knowledge, I agree with pretty much everything he/she has said

During the back stage pass program I asked what else Africa Rocks will include. Besides the stuff currently on the website they said there are plans to expand the kopje and include African Penguins. They wouldn't say anything else since the plans continue to change on what will be included. The bus road is suppose to be pushed to one side of the exhibit to maximize animal space and not have exhibits on two sides of the road.

The website shows about 6 million raised out of the $20 million match goal.

The yellow footed rock wallabies are off exhibit until they can find a new home in the zoo, the bighorn is back at the park, the siberian musk deer is by the moving walkway towards the gorillas and the warthogs are on the other moving walkway.

There are no wild dogs at the zoo currently but will be brought back for Africa Rocks. The male had been transferred to another zoo and the old female died.

Interesting they are still stating they will have an African leopard exhibit. I strongly suspect these will be Amur leopards in an African themed habitat. (Though I would be happy to be proven wrong and to see two different leopard exhibits).

Being that they have clearly expressed plans to build an Amur leopard exhibit south of Panda Trek, I would be quite surprised if there isn't two new exhibits being built for Panthera pardus.

I'm surprised that it has taken over a year and they still haven't broke ground on the amur leopard and snow leopard exhibit, but they just started the cougar exhibit without even raising money for it.

I can't wait until the construction starts on the Africa exhibits and more information is released about the five habitats. The sliding money progress bar moved just a small amount last week and looks likes its about 8 million now. 12 million more to go.

They are suppose to build a new parking garage for employees past the kids zoo, I wonder when that will start.

I'll be interested to see what sort of hoofstock the zoo will incorporate into the new Africa Rocks. They haven't mentioned a single hoofstock species yet in any of the description so I'll be interested to see what all they have planned.

It looks like about 2 million was raised in the last two weeks (rough estimate based on the sliding bar)

I wish they would release some more details about the plans

My guess is they will since they released the African Forest Canopy at about the 5 million dollar mark. They might be unveiling each habitat every five million raised. Just a thought.

I spoke with one of the keepers in the cat area two days ago. They said the plans are still being made and right now there is nothing definite - anything could happen. When I asked about the amur leopards being moved down by the pandas it was confirmed. When I asked about a second leopard exhibit with African leopard, they said that is not definite but if it happens it would likely be an amur leopard placed in an African habitat.

No construction has been started and all of the old exhibits are open except for the hillside mountain sheep exhibits, which have a wood fence in front.

The March edition of ZOONOOZ has a short interview with the chairs of the zoo's June fundraising party. When asked about the vision for the fundraiser, they answer "...to raise funds for the zebra, baboon, ibex, and warthog exhibits in the Zoo's Africa Rocks area..."

An ad on the same page for the fundraiser says that donations are "...for animals from the savanna and cliff areas of Africa Rocks."

So this seems to reveal two unspecified species we have not heard about yet: zebra and ibex. And it seems to reveal two sections we have not heard about yet: savanna and cliff.

San Diego Zoo Global has joined a national cheetah breeding coalition. The mixed exhibit with dogs in the Urban Jungle isn't a top-notch exhibit so I would love to see them build a new exhibit in the Africa Rocks savanna section and help the Safari Park with breeding these big cats.

I was talking to a keeper today about the new Africa rocks exhibit and he said that at the last meeting he went to, the plan of action was to definitely move the lions into Africa rocks and try to move as many African animals into the new exhibit as is practical. They were also discussing what should replace the lions in elephant odyssey.

There are still plans to add penguins but other than that there were not a whole lot of decisions made on what else to bring into the zoo that hasn’t been announced yet.

I personally hope they add aardvarks, jackals, ground pangolins, and nile crocodiles.

I'm glad to hear that the lions are gonna get a new exhibit my guess is they'll be the focal point of the savanna.

I hope that their mandrills get a new exhibit and I would love to see them bring in either shoebills or marabou storks.

marabou storks are on display at the safari park and I think they have shoebills there as well so they could easily be added to a new exhibit
