Chester Zoo New Animals At The Zoo

What animals would everybody like to see at the zoo? Personally id like to see hyenas and wolves.

Personally, I'd like to see alot more species of pheasant along with some of the much rarer galliformes. Would be nice to have Blue Billed as well as Red Billed Curassow! Not that I'm biased!!
With regards to other potential animals, although some are difficult to exhibit, I feel that more could be done on the Invertebrate side. Having compared Chester to some other collections, they only form a small part of the exhibits.:D

Drills would be top of my list. Placed in the heart of Africa when its built.

I would like to see more ungulates, and the Siberian cranes which were supposed to have arrived about 20 years ago.

There's quite a list to be honest. I will however just mention that i would like for them to enlarge the hoofstock collection a bit.
Stuff like Addax, Arabian Oryx, Dama Gazelle, White Tailed Gnu, Gaur, Banteng, Impala, Gerenuk, Yellow Backed Duiker, Bearded Pig, Malayan Tapir, Thompsons Gazelle, Somali Wild Ass, Bontebok, Kiang, Lesser Kudu, Giant Eland, Thorold's Deer, Khul's Deer, Sable Antelope, Mishmi Takin would be brilliant.

Does anybody know if there are any plans to move the lions when the first phase is complete?

no i didnt mean move them into the africa zone i meant is there any plans to improve there enclosure or move them to a new one

Id love the lions to be moved into a really big enclosure or bring in a pride of african lions into a really large enclosure

It would be a sad day if Chester got rid of their Asian Lions. I think chesters lion enclosure is one of the better lion enclosures in UK zoos.

do you think they will eventually house both african and asian lions at the zoo especially as the asian lions have problems breeding. Also does anybody know if there is a way of finding out what animals are still at the zoo or animals that have moved on are getting on?

I think it could maybe do with being a bit bigger though.
Is the "Heart of Africa" the massive domed exhibit with Gorillas, Chimps and that?

No, there are guidelines set out by the EEP, so that these two species (is that right?) are not housed at the same collection because of cross-breeding.

Here a great place for finding some of those answer, try searching the forum for your answers if not ask specific questions about which animals you are after more knowledge.

There are quiet a few members here that are quite upto date on Chester.

could they not but them in seperate enclosure keeping the asian lions where they are but extending the enclosure and building a new enclosure for a african lion pride. Does anybody know what happened to jake asokas dad i remember seeing him when i was about 7

Where would you extend the Asian Lion enclosure?

In June 2000 Jake moved to Boissiere in France but sadly died shortly afterwards.

id extend it more towards the house or more towards the shop maybe even taking the shop away and making it really big.

Bit of a morbid question but what happens when the animals die in the zoo what happens to them?

The official recommendation from EAZ lion management is that no Asiatic lions will be maintained within a zoo housing African lions and vice versa no zoo with Asiatic lions will acquire African lions for display purposes either. This is an EEP Asiatic lion and African lion monitoring policy and any zoo not acting in this fashion is considered OUT material.
