Edinburgh Zoo New Arrivals in 2009

The deer bring the zoo herd up to 16 animals, both species are currently being held in the now vacant camel house.

Have Edinburgh already bred from their original pair(or was it a trio)?

Berlin have the largest number and are listed as(previously) having 6.11 so I don't quite see how they've sent 7 more males to edinburgh, unless an extra one joined the export from one of the other zoos holding this species. There are only about 5 European zoos keeping them.

The Tierpark Berlin listings on ISIS is not very reaible; still list species which has been gone from the collection for over 2 years. I believe Berlin keep several more than the 6.11 listed on ISIS + though with the 7.5 send to Edinburgh it would be interesting to know exactly how many that remain in TP Berlin. Also White-lipped deer is mantained in at least 8 European zoos (Edinburgh, TP Berlin, Wuppertal, Hilvarenbeek, Usti, Lodz and Sa Coma), have heard that there should be some in Italy (safari park) as well.

Tierpark Berlin is often transfer port of call too. It has extensive experience in assembling stock and then sending it on to new collections. So to speak, an assembly point for surplus males + perhaps 1-2 males from their own collection with the good no. of females.

It has been known to happen before ... (just consider the addax Sahara Conservation Fund relocation to Morocco where all individuals for transport went to Hannover before being flown on to Morocco)!!!! :D

Yes, I think you are probably right in this case too- most of the new White- lipped Deer deer may have come from Berlin's herd but with a few(perhaps the extra males?) from one or two of the other smaller groups in Europe too, but all travelling direct from Berlin to Edinburgh.

I've only ever seen this rather remarkable species once- in Blijdorp Zoo- who appear to no longer keep them. Unfortunately Edinburgh is a long way from me...:(

3 european male wolves arrived from highland wildlife park, housed in wolf wood, just beyond the jaguars where the japanese serow were

2.0 Lady Ross's touraco will be arriving at the zoo this week and will be going into the African aviary.

female bali starling has arrived and in the rhino-walk avary

these are not quite new but have been held off show - phantasmal poison frogs are going on display shortly within Magic Forest

30 Guinea Baboons due to arrive within the next week or so from Vicennes Zoo (just outside Paris) which is now closed for a 3 year renovation

these will be housed in the old Gorilla House - this allows the Barbary Macaques to move back to Barbary Rock as they have completed quarantine!!!

What has happened to Mercedes the polar bear is she still moving to HWP? Has she already gone?

The renovation of the enclosure at HWP is ongoing. This is expected to be completed and ready by the end of August.

Mercedes' moving up has no defined timeline as she is undergoing training with the 'moving crate' as the Zoo do not want to sedate Mercedes due to her age.

Well according to zootierlist shes already at Highland so is that somebody getting a little bit to excited about her moving there then!!!

1.4.1 swamp wallabies have arrived from Zurich, along with the existing male in the collection they have been moved to the Bawean deer/blue crane paddock next to the sea lions, and the deer have been moved to the former wallaby paddock next to the koala house.

Hog deer

Just a bit worried for the Hog deer if they have moved to the old wallaby enclosure the last hoofstock animal that was there the serow ( now up at HWP) contracted a nasty bug and whiped out all but 2 of them. Do have a soft spot for the Hog deer. What is happening with the cranes are they still in the enclosure. I also see from the zoo blog that there are new arrivals in Bundongo in the form of carp if i am right in remembering from the blog its mirror and common carp in the moat before you enter the building.

they were being placed in the old Gorilla House (the barbary macaques have moved back to Barbary Rock)

i believe there to be 30 arrivals, not sure of sex ratio but I am at the zoo at the weekend so will find out more then

counted 33 baboons including what looked like about 5 youngsters and at least one pregnant female in the troop

the largest group of primates i have seen at edinburgh zoo and spent about an hour watching them playing/fighting/patrolling the old gorilla outdoor enclosure

i read that a zoo in north america are sending 2 female drill to the zoo this year, they have gone from the isis listings does anyone know if they are in the uk yet?

They are. It is mentioned on another thread somewhere. One of the males from Edinburgh may also be going somewhere else- presumably either a European zoo or the new male group at Woburn.

Does anybody know if this is the entire group from Vincennes or just a large portion? I know they had plenty when I visited 4 years ago, but to ship over 33 seems alot.

yes, Vicennes Zoo is closing down for between 3 - 5 years for a massive renovation so they have sent ALL their animals to other zoo collections - Edinburgh received the whole troop of guinea baboons

was at the zoo on Sunday and the primate keepers confirmed that they are in Edinburgh on breeding loan however they expect to keep them for several years

I believe this has been mentioned previously (and on the zoo blog a few weeks ago) but the Lady Ross' Turaco are now finally on show in the Avaries behind the Rhino Paddock

also the African Crowned Cranes have been swapped so there is now a breeding pair on show in the African Aviary, alongside a new female Turaco as the previous bird unfortunately passed away
