There was a birth yesterday at Blackpool zoo. A new baby hartmans zebra. The sex is unknown yet but its a first for Blackpool zoo. The mother is Helena and the father is Fernando who came from Germany about 14/16 months ago.

Excellent news as they have had this species for some time with no previous breeding as you say.

Hartmans zebra

Hopefully Bette the other female is pregnant as well. I think they are going to do another test on her. I have only been going to Blackpool zoo for 22 months but did the other male not have testicular cancer? I dont remeber the other male at all, so he must have died before I started going.:)

Excellent news . Probably the first in the UK for several years as collections seem to be experiencing problems putting together compatible breeding groups .

Probably since 2004(?) when I think Paignton had their last one. Marwell appear not to have had a birth during the interim and didn't have a male for a long time until recently.. Linton I don't think have bred them either.

The other male did indeed die of testcular cancer and i spoke to a keeper about two weeks ago if i remeber correctly saying that Bette is pregnant so hopefully two baby Zebras i shall head down to the zoo at the weekend thanks for the news Lynne.

Yes, I think you are right there, and as Pertinax says Marwell have not had a Hartmanns foal in many years , the last was I think, without checking - 1994.

I like that-baby zebra. In formely times, they said"zebra foal", but in this primitive times, all young animals are now called bay tiger, baby lion, baby elephant...

It could be okay to call them zebra baby, altough I don't like that either, because only humans got Babies, and animals got youngsters. So elephants got calfs, not a baby elephant. Just my personal view, but in this nowadays times, i don't wonder about this what i call the primitve adult baby language.

I'm sure that Marwell had a female youngster in 2006/2007. They definetly moved 0:1 who was under two years old to Paignton in May 2008 (was shown on the Animal Planet series, Creatures Like Us)

I'll have to have a closer look at the sign by the zebra paddock in Paignton. I've made a note that female Goma, who arrived in 2008, was from Munich? Tara was born in Paignton in 2002 and male Blesk arrived from Sigean last year (born in Dvur Kralove).

From the Studbook...;)

The female transferred from Marwell to Paignton wasn't born at Marwell;

'Goma' born Munich 2006.
transferred to Marwell 2007
transferred to Paignton 2008.

Last foal at Marwell was born in 1997.
Last foal at Paignton was born in 2002.

Marwell imported a new male 'Tschecha' in March 2007 but he died in July the same year so was only there circa 4/5 months. They now have the ex Paignton Stallion 'Bingo'

If anyone's instrested the last foal born at Paignton was:
Taru who is still at Paignton. She was born in 2002 so there has been quite a gap but They are hopeful to start breeding them again now that they have a new male.

Tarsius- why do you keep trying to derail perfectly legitimate threads by posting rubbish? :( Please refrain, you just spoil these threads for other, more serious posters.
