The founder and head keeper of the DeYoung Family Zoo has been working on writing a book for the past 1-2, possibly more years. The book is now in publishing and they are excepting preorders.

I just rented the book from the local library yesterday and finished it last night. It was a fascinating read. I already knew some of the stuff about Buddy working the night shift in the beginning years as a semi driver to help cover costs of starting the zoo, but I had never heard the full story of the toll it took on his two marriages. It also talked about some of the recent happenings at the zoo such as how they have begun neutering more of their tigers to reduce the number of cubs born. It also talked about the zoos future goals of taking in rescue chimps and how they took in their current Chimp Louie as an orphan so that they are able to get use to chimp husbandry before dealing with chimps that have more troubles. It also talked about how he first got introduced to the area and got to know the people, especially the local hunters, and how his mom had to force him to move there after his father passed away on his 18th birthday. Overall, I would recommend this book to most zoochatters to see the work that Buddy DeYoung and Carrie Cramer put into caring for animals of all types in Michigan's UP. I would especially recommend the book to anyone who has ever considerred or dreamed of running there own zoo.
