Just came across this book yesterday at the Natural History Museum. Sounds like an interesting zoo-history read

I’ve purchased a copy of this book; it is a very recent acquisition so I’ve not had time for anything other than a cursory glance yet but I agree; it promises to be a very interesting read.

In actuality the book concerns itself with exotic animals in general in Georgian London rather than pure menageries(which ARE included however),subjects such as turtle eating and civet-scent production.Its not a bad book,but not without fault either..interestingly I recently acquired the author`s original thesis from which the book is produced..its hardback with many more illustrations and in colour too(the paperback is only black and white), with an extra chapter on elephants that isnt in the published book.I won it in the auction at Zoohistorica for little more than double the price of the paperback...a bargain methinks!

Oh...just remembered, the published book is a hardback,quite probably it will be a cheaper paperback later(or is now),but it isnt expensive in any case.

I read this too, really enjoyed it.

I assume you have also read Tom Hahn's 'The Tower Menagerie' ?
