As part of a plan to reintroduce the chough to Kent, an aviary has been constructed on the grounds of Dover Castle. The aviary and reintroduction project are being managed by the Wildwood Trust, Kent Wildlife Trust, English Heritage and Paradise Park. The aviary will be occupied from late summer.
The role of the aviary will be to allow visitors to the area to get reacquainted with the bird and learn about its role in the local culture - choughs appear in local folklore about the murder of Thomas Becket and are depicted on the coat of arms of the nearby city of Canterbury.
