Regarding the elephant herd at Hannover Zoo the prospects are looking good. It was reported Sayang was pregnant, now it has been posted that Farina may also be pregnant.

Thomson's gazelle have arrived from Safari Ramat Gan in Israel for the African savannah. Some relocation of other antelope has occurred.

Primates: another Javan silvered langur has been born (making 2 births in as many months. Gorilla Melima may be pregnant.

Building of the new Yukon Bay exhibit is coming on strong. The trapper/miner village is already finished and some major groundwork has been done on the various exhibits (polar bear, penguin, karibu, wolves). And for Yukon Bay 0.3 caribou have been imported.

Thanks jelle:)

Would you (or anyone) happen to know what the future holds for Hannover after Yukon Bay is finished? Another theme world perhaps?

so with the addition of the 3 females does that give Hannover a herd of 2.5?

I hope that their next themed world is a new exhibit for the gorillas and the chimpanzees somewhere near their Zambezi area. Or what do you think??

I hope Farina is not pregnant, because she is only 5 years old. A few month ago an elephant keepers means that she and Califa, who is 5 years too, are not in estrous.

After Yukon Bay, the next project should be new exhibits for Chimpanzees and Orang-Utans. The Gorillas have a real good exhibit which is only 10 years old. But the Ape-House where Chimps, Orangs and Gorillas live in is very old and has to be rebuild.
But before start this prjekt it will take 10 years or more.

I don't think that the gorillas have a "real good" exhibit. Their outdoor exhibit lacks some vegetation and just a few climbing frames, but this could easily be fixed. But their indoor exhibit is as bad as the chimps' and orangs'.

In Comparision to the outdoor exhibits of the Chimpanzees the Gorilla exhibit ist very good. She is very large, but you are right, I miss some more climbing trees.

The Orang-Utan outdoor exhibit is the badest exhibit at the whole zoo.

Here some pictures.

Hanover's 'Gorilla Mountain' is not an ideal exhibit- very bare, no vegetation or cover, very few trees and with dangerous drops into the watermoat. It could be made much more attractive, both for the Gorillas and visitors, at not too much expense,I think, as it is perfectly spacious. The Gorilla group I believe have some social problems also, despite breeding okay so they might benefit if they could obtain more privacy from each other with clumps of trees, bushes etc.

Is there any official confirmation that Yukon Bay opening is postponed so that the polar bears from Vienna won't be transferred there within the next few weeks? They might stay longer (--> untill April/May?) at Zoo Vienna.

They still worked at the polar bear exhibition. I don't think that they would finished in the next weeks. Maybe the indoor enclosure ist allready finished.

Maybe I will take some photos next week.

The californian sealions (0,4) and the 0,3 grey seals live together now. The male seal is seperate. He is only one year old and attacked by the females.

Also Hannover gets 3 or 4 new female caribous and Northern fur seal (!!) for Yukon Bay.

2.4 northern fur seal have arrived at the zoo, The two-year old Bruce, Roger, Donna, Diva, Kelly, and Smilla come from a zoo in Izhevsk (Russia) and currently these are the only northern fur seals in Europe!
They are currently housed in the former walrus pool, until there new enclosure in the Yukon bay development is completed, where they will share with Californian sea lions and grey seals.

Moskow, Odessa and Minsk Zoo also keep northern fur seals, Minsk is a successful breeder.

Wow, those three species ranges don't overlap at all in the wild. I guess I shouldn't complain too much since this is a Yukon themed exhibit that also has penguins!

@Ituri

True. And for your information: The penguins in the Yukon themed exhibit are a running gag in another (german) forum for a long time:)
By the way: The exhibit will also show prairie dogs - another "typical" animal from this region, isn't it?:)

Zoos in Australia should build Bavarian ski resorts as exhibit for brown bears and wolves. ;)
