Dierenpark Emmen (Closed) New elephant born at Emmen Zoo

It's confirmed to me by one of the elephant caregivers: it's a boy, and he was ca 100 kilograms at birth.

wow, thanks guys, great news, Radza's descendents has lost pattern no wait hold on what gender was the stillborn?

Wow they've had alot of little males born!

The herd is quite big now, is there any plans to seperate the herd like when Thi Ha Phyu and Khaing Lwin Htoo and sons were sent to Koln. Or have they still got room for all the females?

Your right Naing Thein sired a lot of Males but if you see Radza's pattern it goes female-male, but that depends on what sex the stillbirth was,

I don't think there planning to seperate again, because a new exhibit is going to open I think in 2012? Plus anyways, the males when about 5 or 6 will continue to be transported to other zoos,

This male-only pattern in Emmen is extraordinary. Maybe it's something with feeding?

What do they particularly feed the elephants, with all respect there I don't think would make a difference with Gender.

I watched this documentry on A.I of an asian elephant and they mentioned that gender determining is usually from the male ( that's only them predicting though) As what I said before perhaps its just with Naing Thein as that Radza has a good 50% chance ratio, ( again depending on the gender of the stillbirth between Ananda and Yoe ma)

The elephants in Emmen are getting 'normal' elephant feed. I don't think the food matters. There are more bulls with a high male-offspring rate. Calvin for example has 8.3

Splitting up the herd is no question today. When they did with Thi Ha Phyu and Khaing Lwin Htoo, the bull (Naing Theing) stood on his own 'island'. But with Radza things changed. He refused to step into his inside enclosure and therefore stays with the herd. His island is now part of the complete enclosure for all elephants. So; more room.

I think this situation can stand until the move to the new exhibit.

At least 3 times, probably 4 times the present one. With a special 'overnight' area, and a large barn.

I know that Emmen does'nt test its females for pregnancy anymore like they used to, but is there any presumed pregnancies?
