Chester Zoo New Exhibit @ Chester???

They are taking steps to generate revenue to make sure they continue to florish during the credit crunch and develop in the future.

Chester do not seem to be affected by the "credit crunch" in fact they seem busier this time of year than last year.

Its the free entry to the frost fair & free entry if your names david on St davids day. Things like this that is a worrying trend when chester do not seem to need to boost visitor numbers.

Boosts in visitor numbers are always needed, and always welcome. Especially with big plans for expansions and improvements to fund.

Large zoos like Chester attract all sorts of people, of all ages. Nothing wrong with providing some alternative entertainment to break up the day for less diehard zoogoers.

I wonder whether the keepers believe the elephants are disturbed by the carousel? I don't like speculation, all that does is encourages criticism that may not be warranted.

To attract kids, therefore when you visit the twilight zone , tropical realm or elephant house it with a little luck might be a little quieter:p

I think we all have to take into account that a day at the zoo is for everyone not serious zoo people like ourselves, and children need to be catered for
It should also be remembered that this attraction, no matter how big will not be hijacking valuable land for animals, the zoo is on the verge of developing 100's of acres, plenty of room to share.

Fair comment, Kiang, I sometimes forget that not all people are serious zoo people like us. :D

Zoo History

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that I've always been disappointed that there's nothing at the zoo about its history & particularly Mr Mottershead's contribution to improving zoos worldwide. I decided to email the zoo to ask about this, and received two replies from different departments both explaining that they are very proud indeed of their history. Apparently the 'Hard Rain' near the aquarium will shortly be replaced with a banner of the same size about Mr Mottershead & the founding of the zoo. It will be officially opened by his daughter, June Williams, but no date for this was specified.

I was very pleased to hear about this, so thought I'd pass it on. They say that they'd love to have a permanent exhibition on the subject, but that they haven't got the space ( ) for it, and feel that the money it would cost would be better spent on animal welfare.

There will also be an article about the zoo history in 'Z' later this year, and one of the Member's talks this Autumn on the same subject - this being the zoo's 75th year.

It is the zoo's 78th year, the 75th anniversary is that of the North of England Zoological Society.

After seeing this today it looks very strange indeed, not what I expected. It does look more like a moated island than a mini golf course.
