New Forest Wildlife Park New Forest Wildlife Park News

On October 7th, the zoo announced their 4 Alaskan timber wolves named Aspen, Chaser, Idaho, and Rocky passed away over the past year due to age-related conditions (with Aspen and Chaser passing away recently when Aspen's health took a significant decline).

That's sad news. A long life and a great space to live it in though. Must be sad for the keepers as they were there 13 years but it's heartening to see zoo teams make such good but difficult calls at the end of the life of their animals.

I felt very lucky to get good views of them in the New Forest zoo when I visited as they are a rare find in UK collections now and they were so interesting to see.

Oh no.

Hopefully they will get some more wolves. It is one of the more prominent enclosures.

I had a look at the park's website and it seems there is some substantial work going on.

The website says that several species are temporarily off show for renovation and construction work. If you look at the map it shows a large section including the former wolf enclosure, mouflon enclosure (listed as one of the species temporarily off show) and the wild boar enclosure next to the lynx as under renovation.

It will be very interesting to see what happens.

A new otter cub born on November 10th to parents Soriah and Song. The cub has been named Bannhea, which means "trouble ". He will join siblings Anupa and Ananda, who were born in 2018.

The otter cub is a smooth coated otter.

New Forest wildlife park have a few different otters; smooth, short claw, giant and Eurasian indeed I’d say that’s one of their key features.

I visited.

A lot of work going on. Nice to see the new wildcat and pine marten enclosures that have already been mentioned. It also looks like there is a newly built offshow enclosure behind the Scottish Wildcats. Presumably also for the species.

Regarding the major renovation work currently in progress, the species have been announced.
  • An aviary for white tailed sea eagles is being built on the wild boar enclosure next to the lynx. This is where the male wild boar used to be held. He is now next to the female wild boars in the meadow section.
  • The mouflon enclosure is being converted for wolverines.
  • They will be getting new wolves. They are taking the opportunity to refurbish the wolf enclosure while it is empty.
One question remaining is what will happen to the mouflons? They are only listed as temporarily offshow.

From a Park email received yesterday:

“We are thrilled to announce the arrival of our newest resident, Bodie the wolverine to the New Forest Wildlife Park!

For several months, the team has been thoughtfully designing and constructing a habitat that mirrors Bodie’s natural environment.

Bodie is male and joins us from London’s Whipsnade Zoo, he was born in early 2022. His arrival at the park is just in time for Easter!”
