Chester Zoo New indian rhino

'Yodha' was born at Whipsnade, one of the four male offspring of Kumar & Roopa(their previous breeding pair who had 8 calves in total but the other 4 D.N.S).

I can't remember his d.o.b. but he is listed on the Indian Rhino website mentioned above as he's now living/breeding in West Berlin.

I believe he was sent to Chester on a temporary basis and he did live in the old Rhino House for some time. There could be several reasons why they went no further with the species at that time; they couldn't source a female or there wasn't room to house a pair in that old house (these being pretty huge animals) or it was later recommended he move elsewhere, or a bit of each maybe.

Yodha was to have had a mate, but no females of a suitable age that were unrelated could be obtained. He was housed in the western enclosure of the old rhino house.

Why? Was Baabuu not trained to enter the crate? Is he still at Chester?

Even if he's crate trained, the arrival/smell/sight of another rhino might have spooked him so he's refusing to do what he's asked...

Where there any similar problems when he was transferred from Edingburgh to Chester, too? Maybe that all brought back bad memories to poor Baabuu. He was just 1 year and 11 months old when he was seperated from mommie, put into a crate and send through half Europe from Basel to Edingburgh. That is not funny for any rhino youngster ...

I believe he was crate trained as much as any animal can be,but as anybody that has been involved in moving an animal anything can happen on the day of a planned move to stop it happening!!As for if he is still at Chester will try and find out when I visit tomorrow, and if I get time before I flight out to Berlin for Zoo Historicia at Leipzig Zoo will post the answer on here!

It is slightly more complex than any crate training issue.

Babuu is still at Chester and will be for a couple more weeks yet.

If there is any chance to take a photo of Beni, pleeease do. :)

Baabu was wandering around his paddock quite happily at closing time 6.00pm yesterday
27-8 11
His crate was parked halfway into the rhino house, so I would think the keepers are attempting to get him into it whenever the opertunity arises.
No sign of Beni though

Thanks, tigercat! Great to hear, Baabuu is doing well, he just doesn't want to enter his crate. I was pretty concerned about Baabuu, indian rhinos can get injured seriously when they get angry + in panic ...

As you rightly say mate, crate-training is all very well in principal, but Rhinos have a habit of doing exactly what they feel like at the time , and theres not much you can do about that! I have seen some Rhinos crated within minutes, with hardly any crate-training what-so-ever , whilst others can have access to the crate for many weeks and additional conditioning but they will still be awkward and won`t budge.
In general crate-training is a useful tool for most species but it is certainly no guarentee!!

Well, that doesn't sound fine. Is he doing well?
Saw both of them today, both looked to be ok.Did ask about why Babuu didn't move did get an answer of sorts but I'm not posting it,because I have been asked not to and I will not say even if you send me a PM!!!!

If your not going to tell anyone what the answer you got was is there any point in saying you know? It frustrates other members and is like kids at school saying 'I know something you don't know'.

I've done it so that I don't get asked the same question via PM that I cannot answer yet,and so I don't come back to a full in box when I return from a trip to Germany.I will post and answer as to why he didn't move when I get told I can,so I did it to stop people from guessing the zoo's reasons for him not leaving when he should have, and so they would know that at somepoint an answer would be given!!If you don't like how I post things you can put me on your ignore list so you don't have to read them,I personnaly don't care either way!

Just a few things:

1. You clearly do care, if you didn't you would not have responded to my post.

2. I like the majority of your posts and enjoy reading them so I will not be putting you on my ignore list.

3. You say you did it to stop speculation and that you were letting people know that at some point and answer would be given. Well of course an answer would be given eventually we didn't need a post for that. As for the speculation I think your comment will increase the speculation, people are still going to guess.

4. Would people be PM you if you had not made this comment in the first place? Probably not.

5. Enjoy your trip to Germany, I look forward to hearing all about it when you get back.

Mate it aint that. It is the very fact that some information is at the discretion of zoo staff. Please for once understand the implications. Furthermore, it is on a need to know basis anyway, so what the heck do Zoo Chatters have anyway to do with when and where he will eventually crate up to Pilsen. Be patient for when it eventually happens. Soon enough that.

Well, that "I will not say even if you send me a PM" was targeted at me and it is ok for me. Sooner or later, Baabuu will leave Chester ... :)
