We would just like to announce we have managed to Import our own Meerkats to Pouakai Zoo. We already had Meerkats but as time went on we sadly lost them due to old age...when we had one left we knew it was time to do something about it. With no luck sourcing any from within New Zealand we had to look to South Africa and with the wonderful help of our supplier over there we are now pleased to have new buddies for our exsisting Meerkat.
This was the first time we have ever imported and it was a huge learning curve for us. We now know what is required and will soon be importing more animals for Pouakai Zoo.:)

Great news, well done!:D

How many did you import? And any clues about what you will be importing in the future?

Because it was our first time Importing (and we really didnt know how it would go) we only got 2 females, but we have already started the ball rolling with another 4...then Lemurs are next on the list...after that who knows!?!?!? I want reptiles and partner wants more primates hahahaha wonder who will get what they want hehehe :)

a bit of a follow-up to this thread, with this article from August: Meerkat At Pouakai Zoo | Stuff.co.nz

An attempt to find a mate for Pouakai Zoo's lone resident meerkat, Mr Magoo, has led to an unexpected discovery – he should in fact be called Mrs Magoo.

Zoo staff were surprised to find that he was really a she, zoo keeper Fiona Carson said.

"We decided to get another one because it wasn't fair that he was alone so we got a female hoping it would mate with our male," she said. "But when the vet came to check the new meerkat, he also checked out Mr Magoo and found out he was a female."

A slender-tailed meerkat, Mr Magoo was born at the zoo nine years ago and at the time was recorded as being a male.

Ms Carson said meerkats were not handled often which partly explained why its double life had not been revealed before.

One thing now certain to change is the honorific on all of Mr Magoo's paperwork.

"We used to call him Mr Magoo, so now it's Mrs Magoo," Ms Carson said. However, the female meerkat, Melissa, which flew in from Bapsfontein, South Africa and is the first animal the zoo has imported from overseas, hasn't travelled in vain.

Ms Carson said meerkats were social creatures and Mrs Magoo was already enjoying the company. "The two are getting along really well. Melissa has settled in and they're playing, eating and sleeping together," she said.

The pair may soon be able to find more a suitable mate as Pouakai Zoo is aiming to bring up to half a dozen meerkats next year.

"We want to import more for the company and we know how the process works so we hope to have half a dozen by next year," Ms Carson said.
