Hi

I only just found this site.

My name is Rob Callaghan, and my local zoo is Chester. I have been a member of the North of England Zoological Society which owns the zoo since 1976 and try to visit at least once a month.

I look forward to discovering new things on this site, and hopefully helping other members with requests for information.

You are partially right. I like bongos, they are my favourite mammal and I was overjoyed when I heard Chester were having them in the early 1990s. I have not worked at Chester zoo unfortunately.

I have know Penny for 20 years. She is a lovely person. I hope you enjoy your time in the junior club.

I also knew Dr Brambell and Peter Wait. Of the staff currently at Chester I know Tim Rowlands and John Frost of the giraffe section quite well. As you might guess this the area in which some of my favourite mammals are kept, I especially like antelope and cattle.

my name is Zoo_Boy and i like aniamls and zoos, and am almost alcoholic, co-incidently i am almost 18 as well

I assume Patrick thinks too many members like Chester Zoo. Is it our fault it's the best in the world? (Only joking). I'd love to see many of the animals only kept in Australia.

lol, I think its hilarious how some species i can keep at home are unheard of overseas!

You guys need purple crowned lorikeets in the private sector, gosh are they cute!

Yes, like Wombats!!! Bless their little cotton socks!!!

This is Mr Hornbill's quote of the month... Almost as good as his alltime best "baby takins are little darlings....." What will it be for next month....?;)

Regarding Chester Zoo. Its not my local zoo by a long way, but I would have to agree that it is BY FAR AND AWAY the best Zoological collection in Britain, has been for the last forty years, and probably will be for the next forty too.
It is streets ahead of all the others both in the design of exhibits and the breadth and quality of its animal collection. No other UK zoo can touch it really.

Several others are good- Jersey, Marwell, Paignton(improving all the time) Colchester(probably 2nd to Chester in the traditional Zoo mould) but Chester just has a lot more area, stock and exhibits than any of the others.

sorry folks- I know this is the new members section, not an appraisal of UK zoos. I digressed and so please forgive me- it was a moment of madness...:(
