I'm looking for some feedback on how we handle new posts/comments/photos.
Originally this is how the three search options at the top right of the site worked:
"New Posts" showed any thread which have had new posts added to them since the last time you viewed that thread. This also includes new threads. It does not include any posts made in the gallery section.
"New Comments" showed any newly uploaded photo, plus any photo which had a new comment since the last time you viewed that photo thread.
"Recent Photos" just shows all photos in order they were uploaded. It doesn't track which photos you've viewed - it just shows them all and lets you sort them in a variety of ways.
-----------------
I've just changed the "New Comments" search to show only those photo threads which actually have new comments in them - it no longer shows newly uploaded photos unless they also have had comments made. This means that you can no longer use the "New Comments" search to show a list of photos that you haven't yet seen.
My thought is that you would just browse through the "Recent Photos" to show a list of photos that have been uploaded - but this doesn't track which photos you have and have not viewed.
But I'm wondering if we actually need another option: "New Photos" which shows just new photos that you haven't yet viewed ? Do people actually want to see just new photos they haven't yet viewed yet ?
----------------
I was considering including new comments on photos in with the "New Posts" from the forums, but I think that would make things a bit too cumbersome showing both forum threads AND photo threads (which need a thumbnail in the search results) at the same time, so I don't think I will implement this.
-----------------
So, here's what I'm thinking we may need:
"New Posts" shows any forum thread which have had new posts added to them since the last time you viewed that thread. This also includes new threads. It does not include any posts made in the gallery section.
"New Photos" shows any newly uploaded photo which you haven't viewed yet. This would not show photos with new comments unless you haven't actually viewed the photo since it was uploaded. It would be sorted by most newly uploaded photo first.
"New Comments" shows any photo with a new comment since the last time you viewed that photo thread. This would not show newly uploaded photos unless they also have new comments. It would be sorted by photo with the most recent comment first (similar to "New Posts" in that regard).
"Recent Photos" would be removed from the navigation bar, but will remain in the sidebar search area, made more prominent to it is easier to find.
---------------------
Thoughts ? Do people actually use the "New Photos" to search for new photos and track which photos they haven't yet viewed ?
Does having a separate "New Comments" search work okay for everyone - indeed, will having three separate new search features work okay ?
