Colchester Zoo New Species Arrive At Colchester Zoo From The RSCC

If this is true (fingers crossed) I hope that housing them in the old orangutan enclosure would be a temporary thing as:
1. Its too small and not the nicest of enclosures
2. I hope the new tropical house plans haven't been scrapped.

If housing them in the old orangutan enclousure is a temporary thing then the question is where would the zoo build a new bear house? Personally I'd think the white tiger enclousure with a few more climbing objects would make a nice Sun Bear enclosure.

Obviosly I think I'm getting a bit over excited and should wait until they have arrived first or see some evidence from the zoo, lol.

BTW Are there actucally signs up at the zoo saying this?

I went to Colchester on Friday and went past Rajang's old enclosure to find that it was being redeveloped. There was a huge sign saying that the area was being redeveloped for a temporary sun bear enclosure. No mention of where they are coming from and when they are arriving. I have a picture of the sign if anyone has a problem with me posting this!

I do not appreciate my full name being copied and pasted from facebook to here. If I wanted my full name known on here, it would be my username!

I assumed that as there was a sign at the enclosure in question, this news is "official" and thus not a windup or a hoax as it was obviously put there by zoo staff.

You posted on a public place (Facebook), therefore Nisha has quoted yourself with your name which is the done thing in these sort of things.

You have just outed yourself, not Nisha because she did not type 'Joe blog' is Twiglet2010 (would post your name but forget it).

So don't be so quick to get on your high horse.

I think in this case its fairly safe to assume they are the ones from the RSCC (who have the only ones in UK apart from Edinburgh), given that Colchester have just received an influx of other animals from there.

If I wanted my full name to be public on here surely I would have used it as my user name!? I'm not on my high horse, I just don't like the lack of confidentiality on here thats all.
Rudeness is not necessary, I was merely stating how I felt about the issue. And the real issue on here is not my name, it is the sun bears arriving at Colchester, which I am very excited about. The old orang enclosure will be a temporary enclosure for the bears (according to the sign) and I did speak to a member of staff about where they will be moving to, but as I did not ask them for permission to quote/paraphrase the discussion on here I am unsure if I can post it or not

If its not the real issue here why have a go at Nisha for quoting you?

You have made the mess of the situation by saying it was you not Nisha, so there was no need for that outburst at Nisha.

Anyone can go onto Facebook and find that same message and connect the two but they would not of connected it with Twiglet2010, but they will now

Anyhow back to the real issue of Colchester bringing in another species but could actually be better off spending the cash on sorting out the other horrible enclosures in the zoo!

What enclosures do you think are horrible? There are a few that need updating, chimps outdoor enclosure for example. The old orang enclosure does need updating too, so why not do it for a new species?!

Pgymy Hippo, Orangutan Forest, The lion enclosure (Lion rock or what ever the stupid name is for it), the Lemur enclosures, the grey wolfs (but thats maybe because its very full at the moment but would suit 1.2 and offspring better).................maybe it would be better to list the enclosures that are ok?

I probably shold state here that Colchester Zoo is not going to be everyones cuppa of tea, just like Twycross, Chester, London, Howletts, etc...... is not others.

And well Colchester is just one of them zoos that is not mine, it does have some amasing species I have to admit that and the enclosures after the Giraffe, Zebra, Rhino and Elephant housing is not all that bad.

Maybe we should remember we are a forum for discussion, and tit tatting from anyone doesn't help.

I for one am excited that the sun beats are going to Colchester. I have only been to the zoo once, and the real issue I had were thr leopard enclosure, but as I do have a bit of thing about cats in captivity, so it might just be me.

I thought the orang bit was ok for just two of them, but maybe as a place for a possible future breeding group it would need a lot of work.

Are the saki monkeys at Colchester in Rabies quarantine? Assuming they had not been at RSCC very long, they must still be doing their quarantine, is that correct?

I'm not sure Blossom, couldn't find a keeper to talk to on Friday. I know that they came without names and the keepers are going to name them once they've seen their personalities, so hopefully by the time I'm next there on Wednesday they will be named. I'll try and find out about the quarantine too.

You missed the worst one - the Patas Monkey exhibit. I like visiting Colchester for all its faults but that really is dire.

Anywho, back to the topic at hand. Looks like Colchester is the major beneficiary of the run-down of the RSCC - that temporary bear exhibit should be interesting...

With so many contenders I was bound to miss one.........

I just hope the bears are not in there for long, with the lack of height and probably climbing opportunities (similar to Orangutan "forest") the bears could soon become over weight there....:(

Am pleased to read it'll only be a temporary enclosure but am at a loss to think where a more suitable permanent exhibit for bears could be built, or adapted.

Yeah I'm glad too. I wonder if the sun bears being at Colchester is a temporary thing before moving to another zoo? But reading the other posts it doesn't seem that the RSCC is shutting completely anytime soon and therefore needs to move all their animals asap.

But if the zoo is going to build a purpose built Sun Bear enclosure in the future then where have the zoo got space? Like I said earlier I'd think Sasah's enclosure with a few modifications would make a nice Sun Bear enclousure.

I wonder if getting the sun bears has been a last minute thing or has been in the works for a while?

A question to Colchester regulars - What other animals from RSCC would you like to see come to Essex?

That's a very good question. I don't think any bigger animals (clouded leopard, puma, Malayan tapir) would fit, but some of the smaller species could certainly find a good new enclosure somewhere in the zoo. My top ten species would be:

1. Owston's palm civet (Colchester really need to get in on the action with this amazing animal- plus I love Indochinese animals, and this is perhaps the greatest of them all)
2. Fijian banded iguana (Another interesting reptile species wouldn't go amiss)
3. Bali starling (Would love for one of my favourite Indonesian birds to join the collection)
4. Little red flying fox (Colchester could really do with even a small nocturnal house, and these would be excellent additions)
5. Toco toucan (I really miss the old keel-billed toucans, and these birds are the next best thing)
6. Golden mantella (I think Colchester really should get involved with amphibian conservation- Paignton's amphibian area is simply fantastic)
7. Black-and-rufous elephant-shrew (Would look really good in the Kingdom of the Wild)
8. Luzon giant cloud-rat (Again, an interesting nocturnal species)
9. Vietnamese pheasant (Would be an intreresting addition to the new Wilds of Asia)
10. Ground cuscus (Because they desperately need to beef up their current marsupial collection)

And now, a question of my own.

Are the rufous hornbills in the Montserrat oriole enclosure opposite the penguins. And if so, does anybody know what has happened to the orioles?

But then where would Sasha go ?!?
