Hamilton Zoo New Tigeress for Hamilton

Are the cubs from Indonesia hand or parent reared? If they are hand reared (which from memory I think they are?) Then intergrating them with a parent reared tiger (e.g Oz) might prove difficult. If I was in charge then such valuable cats would of stayed with there parents for as long as possible to give them the best chance of raising there own cubs and intergrating with other tigers.
 
The three indonesian cubs have been hand-reared from a few weeks old. Usually this would inhibit their ability to interact with parent-raised tigers (as in many animal species), however Australia Zoo has socialised them with their adult tigers throughout their life which has taught them the necesarry social skills they'll need.

A similar situation occurs at Dreamworld. Indah and Rahni were hand-reared from six weeks but have been socialised with the other adult tigers. They have both been paired with parent-reared tigers, Berani and Satu this year. This is the reason Perth Zoo sent their hand-reared tiger cub Sali to Dreamworld instead of hand-rearing her themselves. She has benefited hugely from the interaction with the tigers at Dreamworld.
 
Does anyone know just out of interest any details on Nico and Meta's first two litters in 1980 and 1985? I heard the two cubs born in 1980 went to Japan and the three from the second litter went to America, does anyone know if they have offspring over there etc.

Of course we all know of Nico and Meta's third litter - Shiva and Jambi who represent the main family of Suamtrans in Austrlasia.
 
So overall TWPZ poached her from Wellington before she even left Dreamworld?
 
Yeah! I reckon Satu get's favourtism since his father Ramalon was born at Taronga Zoo, notice how Ramalon and Juara were found mates, but our Rokan wasn't.
 
Plans may of changed because Berani at the National Zoo in Canberra is a nephew to Rokan. With them being so closely related the studbook holder may of decided that with the girls being unrelated to almost all tigers in Australia and New Zealand they were too valuable to be paired with tigers from one over represented bloodline and in this case it was Wellington that lost out.

On another note it's been reported on another thread that Soroya has left Dreamworld. Any idea's where she has gone? Cairns possibly as a mate for Hari? (born in the 90's at London Zoo)

The ARR stated that Soroya was to be transferred to Mogo Zoo

I was reading through an old magazine dated 1997. It had an article about Sumatran Tigers in New Zealand Zoos. It said that the litter of tigers at Wellington Zoo were due to go to Auckland Zoo. Rokan would then be transferred to Melbourne Zoo. So Rokan's missed out twice, Ramalon took his place to breed with Binjai, then Ramlon's son took his place to breed with Indah.

Also, does anyone know what sort of situation Mogo Zoo has, they supposedly have Seletan's son (the one that isn't Juara or Ramalon), Malu, a tiger called 'Larry' and now Soroya?
 
This is a good site for anyone wanting to get a quick overview of the Sumatran Tigers in Australasia. Unfortunately it hasn't been updated since 2004 so a lot more has happened since it was written.
 
It would seem likely that Molek will be transferred to Orana Park in 2011. Oz may be transferred to another zoo (either Hamilton or Cairns Wildlife Park) to breed with Mencari or Soroya.

Berani will stay at the zoo where a new female will be imported, possibly Maneki from Australia Zoo (born December 2007) or one of Dreamworld's triplets.
 
It's hard to tell but Nico and Poetry share the same father so Shiva and Seletan are half-cousins. If Nico and Meta are not related then their son Jambi and Cantic's cubs are not inbred at all and are very valauble.
 
I think Hamilton plans to get a Sumatran Tigeress in late 2011. She's called Ndari and was born at Dreamworld in 2008. She has four sisters called Indah, Rahni, Jaya and Shanti.
 
I have emailed both Orana Wildlife Park and Auckland Zoo in regards to their sumatran tigers. This would appear to be the overall plan for New Zealand:

Auckland Zoo are sending Jalur and Cinta to Australia in July 2010 and have been asked to keep Molek and Berani together at this stage. Molek is on a contraceptive to prevent her breeding. It is likely that the pair may move down to one of Orana's four tiger enclosures in 2011. This will leave the female sumatran tiger enclosure avaialable for Soroya who is currently at Mogo Zoo.

Hamilton Zoo is still hoping to receive a tigeress in 2011, most likely Jaya from Dreamworld. They will send their tigeress Mencari to Orana Park in Summer 2010-2011 to allow this to occur.

Wellington Zoo's current situation will reamian unchanged. Their mother and son Cantic and Rokan are both too old to breed and Cantic has contributed to the bloodline significantly. When they pass on, possibly in the next eight years, Wellington Zoo has decided to import two unrelated tigers.

Orana Park will become a holding facility in the near future, similar to Mogo Zoo. Theire four tiger enclsoures will accomodate brothers Sendiri and Dumai, mother and son Molek and Berani and female Mencari. Anyone of the three male tigers could be required for breeding in an Australian Zoo in the future.

Nah they do have four tiger enclosures!

I just found it hard to believe that Mogo Zoo could accomodate five spearte tigers in five enclosures unless all five of those tigers were team players like nobody had ever seen before and formed the first, only and last 'pride of tigers'!
