Apoligies if this is old news but according to the park's Facebook page 2 female Sumatran Tigers arrived at Knowsley last month. Does anyone know where they have come from or what they are called? Are these the first in a Safari Park in the UK?

I thought that West Midland SP had acquired at least one Sumatran tiger .

I have just been informed that they are infact Amur Tigers not Sumatran! Some one got there tigers crossed! They both came from Port Lyme.

Thanks Stripes, I knew they were to recieve some but did not know what sub-species.

This conforms to policy at Port Lympne to concentrate conservation breeding on the rarer Sumatran tiger subspecies. I assume Knowsley SP will acquire a male Siberian tiger in due course on the recommendation of the EEP Species Coordinator.

I do wonder about this, as they seem to have only two outdoor enclosures and the one house? Unless the work to the right (as you look at them) was to build another house to allow all tigers outdoor access?

I believe that these two are sisters born 1/4/08 to Tug and Ingrid.

Howletts have 1:1 Sumatran so have Port Lyme also obtained a pair?

Nope, not that I know of.

I simply registered that Howletts has changed over - on purposeful policy - to Sumatrans after relocation/phasing out of Siberian/hybrid Bengals.

K.B.

I thought that Howletts also had a breeding pair - with cubs - of pure Siberians as well as their Sumatrans .

They do indeed still have Siberians. What I believe they have/are phasing out are the remaining non-pure individuals of 'Indian' origin.

Affirmative.

Pure-bred Bengals (normal coloured) do not exist anymore in Europe.
JAF has decided upon 1 pair Sumatrans, 1 pair Siberians.

Eventually, there might be room within EAZA/EEP for a 3rd/4th taxon.

Just been able to comfirm that they are indeed Bira and Sinda. Born 1/4/08 to Tug (m) and Ingrid (f) They are pure bred Amurs.
