As seen in the zoo's ten-year plan, details for the proposed new tropical house at Bristol on the site of 'Zona Brazil' can be found on RH architects site.

'Bristol Zoo Gardens Tropical House
The strategy provides a new tropical enclosure which will, in time, interrupt an undercover route around the zoo. The climate controlled environment recreates part of the South American rainforest with authentic flora and fauna. The central feature is a waterfall experience, which scenically borrows from the existing external lake to make the enclosed, tempered space feel larger. Using ETFE technology we are able to create an organic “roofscape”, helping passive environmental control and varying the space for animals, plants and visitors.'

Looks interesting, the structure is very imaginative. Any ideas of when its going to open?

Looks great, I was only thinking the other week that Zona Brazil was looking a bit worse for wear. Although I think I might have seen these plans years ago, maybe a possible project that got scrapped?

If you look up bongorob's Bristol annual reports thread, you'll find one about their new ten year plan. On the masterplan is a an area shading Zona Brazil that indicates a tropical house.

I agree, plus the enclosure looks a bit small for tapir and capybara, well from the impression i got.

Can't magnify the small pics, but to me it looks as though it's going to take up the otter enclosure, all of Zona Brazil , the cassowary enclosure and maybe even the Okapi enclosure too, as the waterfall in the building leads into the lake... So basically a quarter of the zoo lol. Does anyone else see this? It's difficult as the pics really small.

@Dalek: Thanks, will try and find it now.

Thank you, already found it :p I read the first one by mistake though, a lot of time was wasted
Interesting how the Okapi enclosure and house seems to be planned for a new exhibit, I hope they keep the Okapi. Seems to be quite a large exhibit near the butterfly house too, wonder what for.

That is interesting, do this mean that the pygmy hippos are leaving the collection?

Maybe the Okapi are moving to the new site? I hope they don't get rid of them as they have such a good success rate with them.

Looks like it might be possible, unless they just get a new exhibit. The Okapi and Gorilla house is listed though, so they won't be able to do much to it.

Yeah the enclosure is not great I was disappointed when I saw it. Saying that I like Chesters but the size is too small.

The other new exhibit takes up the entire Gorilla/Okapi Houses and Okapi and Hippo paddocks; methinks that it's (hopefully) a redevelopment for the existing species'.

I would hope, maybe they'll make the gorilla house bigger, it needs it, especially since they're breeding so well and they now have another potential mother.

THats weird no 6 on the masterplan no6 includes the okapi and the gorilla house and the okapi exhipit. maybe they are making the house into just an okapi house. and theres another new exhibit, its quite large what would go in that?
