Mogo Wildlife Park New white cubs for mogo!!!!

and if they are not open to the public , they can kiss goodbye to some of the potential funding .

central breeding facilty

you might find this plan would meet opposition from tax-payers too. i mean, tax payers in WA might get a little pissed about subsidising their STATE ZOO, which in turn is part of a co-op starting a zoo in NSW, or QLD, etc.
In the US, The Wilds development caused similar problems.

on the other hand

on the other hand (hypothetical) , anyone willing and able to start their own private zoo, like MOGO, could focus on category 2 species, trying to boost the regional population levels of different species.
A possible species list might include Sumatran Tigers3, Snow Leopards4, Golden Cats4, Fishing Cats4...
Mandrills5, Silvery Gibbon4, GL Tamarin2, Emporer Tamarin2, WR Lemur2...
Binturong4, Red Panda2, Maned Wolf4, Dhole4, Fennec Fox4, Sun Bear3...
Black Rhinoceros3, Indian Rhinoceros3 (to make evryone happy ;) ), Brazillian Tapir4...

well, now those two particular species have good reasons why they have not become established - bongo becuse of importation changes that came into effect shortly after the initial import and malayan tapir because of health problems that put the program on hold.

yep, and when either species were imported to try and build up a population from scratch no one could forsee either issues. the Bongo program had grand population projections of up to 35 animals in the region.
by the same token, we do not know if the Indian Rhino will have problems here in the Australian envionment (unlikely i know), but more worryingly, biosecurity/import laws may be tightened. potentially leaving Dora, Kua and whatever other rhinos are imported before then effectively stranded.

on another note, Australia Zoo having lots of money to throw at starting a breeding program is no guarantee that they wil automatically get as many rhino as they want, so i wasnt making a dumb comment.
the importation of this animal will need to be a carefully staggered approach. hopefully, Indian Rhino will reach viable levels one day, but i hope not at the expense of Black Rhino.

ha ha!

five males! thats kinda ironic given the conversation we have been having of late about melbourne litter of four males!

and unfortunately for mogo - no other zoo is prepared to take any!!!!!

best they shelve plans for chimps, and get rid of the sumatran tigers.......looks like they will be needing more lion cages!

Hey patrick, they can always sell them to Lennons. ;)

Make a great circus act, 5 white lions jumping through hoops!

So educational, too!

they are part of the international program, so i would say the amles, and the last cubs would be off to africa.

an international breeding program to preserve a mutant gene in an animal species for our own athetics...

sorry, there i go again....

There is no intenational program for white lions - it's a single South African zoo initiative, and Mogo chose to join in. Funny how no other zoos in the world are showing any interest in these animals...

Zoo_Boy The white lions are'nt a part of any real breeding programs... the white lion trust is in charge of this program not any recognised zoos, in fact it is run by an ex lawyer I believe. she has plans to release the lions to the wild over years and years, as whole white prides... In my opinion this would have been better done by releasing tawny lions carrying the white genes but let's not debate this. In south Africa there are two groups that work with white lions... the one I just mentioned and the white lion breeders association, sadly this association has some members that do supply the game hunting industry but the owner of seaview game lodge, Rusty Gibb is in charge of this and they have the most reliable info on the white lions in captivity.

West Midlands Safari Park in the UK has bred two litters from the original pride of one male and two females. I think they've kept them for about 2 years now.

I do realise that it's a safari park not a zoo though...

If you go by the name lionman, then of course your going to want white lions on your property. he got his white lions through the rhino and antelope park, again through the white lion protection group. I think you'll find that most holders of white lions, probably all are private parks, that need a good attraction animal.

I saw a white female at the Toronto zoo a few years ago and there are one or two of the bigger zoos in the US with them, I have heard that some zoos in China also have them

i side with pat's cynisism, and just how related are these animals to one another anyway?
Mogo would have been better off diversifying its collection and strengthening its ties to the regional zoo community rather than commiting to this half arsed program. it makes no sense to me at all, from both a conservation and fiscal viewpoint.
are bill and sally padey divorced now?

Yes, but you, glyn, and pat are a couple of purists. You are also knowledgeable enough about conservation breeding to know that mutations don't help the cause one little bit.

Rightly or wrongly, many people are quite interested and intrigued by mutations.
The advertisement columns of avicultural magazines are full of ads for PASTEL BLUE indian ringnecks; OPALINE turquoise parrots; WHITEFACE cockatiels etc.

Likewise, the reptile breeding industry, still in its infancy in Australia, is working like crazy to breed hypermelanistic (i.e. black) blue-tongued lizards and albino carpet pythons.

As Mogo cannot sell its white lions, I guess the only reason they've got them is so they can advertise something that no other Australian zoo has.

Ara, When you say the Reptile breeding industry, are you refering to the one and only place in the country breeding these color morphs reptiles in Australia?

Dunno about the ONLY place breeding color morph reptiles.

Snake Ranch in N.S.W. is breeding hyper.(black) eastern blue tongue lizards, albino eastern blue tongues and albino spotted pythons (maculosa).

SouthernX Reptiles is producing albino carpet pythons.

Trowunna Wildlife in Tasmania is breeding albino blotched blue tongues. I saw a photo of their's in a magazine and the caption stated that "It is hoped within 3-4 years progeny will be available to all."

There are also a number of private breeders working with the following albinos: death adders, eastern brown snakes, eastern tiger snakes, red bellied black snakes, shingle-back lizards and inland bearded dragons.

There are very few of any of these on the market just yet. That will change.
