Proposal for new zoo in Launceston:

Rhinos set to replace horses at Launceston venue

CFTR Trading Ltd, working alongside Care for the Rare Ltd has applied to Cornwall Council for a planning application to change the use of the site in addition to a zoo licence which will allow them to operate from the site at St Leonard’s Equitation Centre.

If approved, it will see the change of use of the existing equestrian land and buildings to zoo use for the housing of non-domesticated herbivores including rhinos along with with associated storage, staff and welfare facilities

Maybe the rhino from South Lakes still owned by previous owner ???

It's proposed that the new zoo would operate from the St Leonards equestrian centre which according to the Cornish and Devon Post is 15*3 acres and has been sold STC. The asking price was £1*5 Million including house, 4 cottages(holiday lets),cafe and shop plus out buildings and swimming pool .Seems cheap to me wondering, why it was that price. I was looking for similar sites in the west country about 10 years ago and a place like that would have cost at least twice that much. Oh ,and they are looking to employ 13 staff.

Opening a zoo in Cornwall would be a risky commercial venture. The price of the estate seems cheap, as you say, and the existing buildings and facilities on site may keep initial capital costs down to get the project started. Care for the Rare Ltd appear to be a zoo/habitat design organisation and are BIAZA corporate members, but they do not seem to have had any zoo design projects implemented - perhaps someone can advise otherwise - so very much an unknown factor..

I'm unfamiliar with the area but isn't this near Todd Daltons leopard and goat farm ???

Does sound a bit risky given the troubles faced by other south west zoos recently.

If the site is 15 acres, are rhinos a bit ambitious if you consider the size of some rhino paddocks at other zoos?

The UK forum is littered with old threads about rumoured new zoos opening - that never did! ( Including another one in Cornwall!) .

I will only believe this is happening once it is actually open !
