New Zoo Keeper

Hey everyone,
I was recently offered a full time keeper position at my local AZA zoo! Though my education and background is in poultry and farm/food animal sciences, I have found a very strong affiliation between zoological operations and domestic animal husbandry through volunteering. I hope to combine knowledge and skill in both fields for a dynamic, enriching environment for the animals and human visitors.
Are there any other keepers that routinely visit this site? I have not signed up for the AAZK as of yet and would love to talk to some people about their experiences. Thanks everyone and have a wonderful day!!

Congratulations on getting started on a zookeeping career. I too have ambitions in that direction, but am probably a bit older than you. I retire from a social work job in 2013 at age 60, and hope to have enough of a CV by then to apply for short-term contracts [possibly maternity cover, for example] in zoos. My qualifications so far are a lifetime keeping birds, and a small amount of zoo volunteering, which I hope to add to over the next couple of years. Always interested to talk with keepers and would-be keepers. What species are you working with?

Welcome Kota,

Should be an interesting time at the zoo with the most recent Director now gone (we wish him good health!)

There are indeed several keepers here, but the AAZK forum should not be ignored!

Welcome to Zoochat! I've been a keeper for many years. I'm currently the area manager for our Australian area. I'd be happy to try to answer any questions you might have.

Having been to several AAZK conferences in the past I can assure you that if you want to learn zookeeping, AAZK is a great way to advance your knowledge and contacts.

:p
