Not sure what irked me more, the price rise - last time I bought a guide from ZSL Regents Park it was £4 to my recollection - or the rather transparent directive to sell more guidebooks!

I agree, £7 is too expensive for a guide book, for what they cost to print I think they would be well paid to charge £5, also I notice the adult admission price has this year increased by one pound to £26, I don't wish to sound stingy as I have never grudged a penny I have given in admission charges over the years to London or any other respectable charity zoo, as I always regard it as a charitable donation as well as an entrance fee, but many of the visitors I am sure will not see it that way. Just referring to the very first guide book I have for London, printed 1966, its charge was two shillings and six pence, twelve and a half pence in new money. Admission charges for the zoo were Monday, except Bank Holiday, Adult five shillings (25p), children three shillings (15p), All other days, Adults seven shillings and six pence (37 and one half penny), children four shillings (20p). There was also a charge then for the aquarium, Adults two shillings (10p), children one shilling (5p), children's zoo was one shilling (5p) all classes, it would be interesting to see how these charges compare in real terms compared with todays prices.
 
In their Online store costs the Whipsnade Guidebook for 5 Pounds, the Zoos guidebook 6 Pounds...

By the way, does anybody know, if the new 2014 Guidebook for Chessington is already available ?
 
Just compared the admission prices of 1966 to present on an inflation calculator. Guide book £2.11. Admission, Mondays except Bank Holidays, Adult £4.22, Child £2.52, other days Adult £6.33, child £3.36, aquarium , adult £1.68, child 84p, 84p being also the admission price of the children's zoo for both classes, of coarse both the aquarium and children's zoo are not charged separately today, still quite a difference in price then compared with what is charged today.
 
Woburn have now produced two versions of their 2014 guidebook: The original with a tiger cover and a 2nd version with a single elephant on the cover..

Is there any other diffrence to these two guides ?Strange, while Guidebook seems to be still popular in teh Uk, they become almost extinct in germany.Especially the zoo directors of the"new"generation name them an"outdated"product"So why british people buy them, but, as said by many zoos here, not anymore in germany ? Until last year, september was the traditional publishing month for the guidebook of Tierpark Berlin..so maybe, it is defenitely part of the past now-there is not yet a 2014 version, and I bet, there will be none. Maybe Knierim is no friend of outdated guidebooks-he hasn't published any in his munich time.

But who cares-as long as the Uk is publishing them, everything is fine...and maybe someday the quality of them will be be better,too...
 
Burgers Zoo has a new guidebook, a completely revised one with new lay-out and it holds a plate with all 35 free-flying bird species of Burgers Bush.

Apenheul also has a slightly renewed guidebook this year.
 
I think that so far the guidebook is only in Dutch, but I would be surprised if they wouldn't publish a german version, they author of their guidebook is austrian....
 
But I think, they do it because they have so many german visitors ?

By the way-whats on the covers of both guidebooks ?
 
Also in Poland some new guidebooks. Completly new guide in Gdańsk Zoo and new edition of former guide in Płock Zoo (giraffes on cover) as well english version of previous edition (penguins on cover).

I think the guide book for San DIego Zoo is now available, there was an advert for it in the last news magazine from SDZ if I remember correctly. However, I couldn't find a way to purchase it via the Zoo's website, but it might be possible direct from the publishers?
 
Do many zoos sell their guidebooks online? I know ZSL do, but haven't really come across any others.
 
Some other british zoo do, Marwell and Knowsley for example,also some in the States and in germany, but not many at all. No wonder in germany, guidebooks become a rarity here, after both Berlin Zoos have stopped producing guidebooks last year.I bet, in 10 years no german zoo will sell a guidebook anymore.Strange, in the the states they have a little comeback...
