Newly discovered / described species 2013

I was doing some background reading on arapaima for a project and was surprised to discover how little is known about their distribution and conservation status. Their IUCN Red List classification is "data deficient", and this is one of the largest and most famous freshwater fish in the world. It shows how little basic information we have on even the most prominent species.

Generally speaking, there is a direct correlation between individual size and population size. Larger animals tend to have smaller populations, as compared to their (relatively) smaller relatives/congeners etc. so it's data deficient status is not so surprising as one might think.

People actively hunt this species though, and a lot of attention gets paid to it, so one would think that it would be better tracked from a conservation perspective.

15 new birds, that's huge news. Not something you hear every day. 15 new mammals, sure, but not birds.
