Newly discovered / described species 2016

Europe gains a 'new' mammal; the Aquitanian Mole (Talpa aquitania).

SOUTHWEST FRANCE AND NORTH SPAIN

Abstract: A mtDNA based study of the population genetics of moles recently captured in France allowed us to discover a new species, Talpa aquitania nov. sp. We are giving here a preliminary description of the new species. Its distribution covers an area lying south and west of the course of the Loire river in France and beyond the Pyrenees, a part of Northern Spain.

I am pleased to share some information regarding a new antbird from the Cordillera Azul, Perú. I visited Flor de Café / Plataforma (most still use the latter name but the town is changing its name to Flor de Café) earlier this year and was fortunate enough to stumble upon a quite distinctive new terrestrial antbird. In another stroke of serendipity, Daniel Lane, Andre Moncrieff, Fernando Angulo Pratolongo and Jesse Fagan arrived in Flor de Café the day after I found the bird, saving a very bumpy and muddy return trip. A description is already underway and will be published as promptly as possible.

The new species appears, by all measures, to be most closely related to Myrmoderus ferruginea (Ferruginous-backed Antbird). The species is quite terrestrial, and appears to be quite territorial, typically in pairs. It seems to favor intact, tall, subtropical forest with open, shady understory. A name for the new species is not quite settled yet so I will refrain from commenting on that.
