"Carex kucyniakii is a poorly known, morphologically unusual Vietnamese sedge (sect. Hemiscaposae, Cyperaceae) that is part of an early diverging lineagewithin the genus. Niue finds skink that was thought to be extinct

"A rare skink thought to be extinct in Niue has been found alive and well on the island.

The Olive Tree skink was rediscovered after a tourist took a photo of one and asked for it to be identified.

The smooth bodied shiny fish like lizard has short limbs and is known to make its home in coastal tropical regions."

The name used in that article (or, more probably, in the press release from which all the articles are based) confused me because Olive Tree Skink is usually applied to a southeast Asian species, Dasia olivacea. The species on Niue is Emoia lawesii which seems to be more commonly known as the Olive Small-scaled Skink. IUCN says it is also in Tonga and (Western) Samoa as well as Niue and American Samoa, but I'm not sure what they base that on as other sources appear to just have American Samoa and Niue.

'Mini godzilla' rediscovered in Peninsula parks after three decade absence

THE SWAMP skink (Lissolepis coventryi), otherwise known as “mini Godzilla” has been rediscovered in parks of the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria after a 30 year absence.

A team of scientists came across a thriving population of skinks while surveying the Mornington Peninsula National Park and they've since been measured and weighed for future study.

To catch the skinks, scientists used low fences to create travel lines that were then put under surveillance, luring them in with treats like honey, rolled oats, peanut butter and sardines.

Despite the positive news, a statement by Parks Victoria made clear the challenges ahead for the survival of these skinks.

“Continuing habitat loss is the biggest threat to this rare skink which is listed as threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act. Its survival is also affected by weed invasion, inappropriate fire regimes and introduced predators like foxes and cats.”
