A thumbnail-sized species of frog, called the starry dwarf frog Astrobatrachus kurichiyana, has been discovered in the Western Ghats of India.

It is the sole member of an ancient lineage that has been classified into the new subfamily Astrobatrachinae. The closest relatives of this subfamily is the Nyctibatrachidae, a family of around 30 Indian and Sri Lankan frogs, but that last shared ancestry with the newly discovered subfamily possibly tens of millions of years ago.
