- The genus Crenicichla (pike cichlids) has been split into different genera. Many of these are kept in aquariums worldwide, so their names need an update from now on:

- Myloplus aylan & M. sauron are two new piranha species that are now split from the very famous black-banded myleus (Myloplus schomburgkii). That makes this species, which used to be extremely easy to identify, a lot more tricky. Myloplus sauron is probably the most common one in captivity now. It's literally named after Sauron from Lord of the Rings, because the stripe on the side resembles an eye.

- The genus Corydoras, the cory catfishes, has been split into seven different genera. This leads to a new name for hundred+ species & the near end of one of the most famous fish genera in the world. Corydoras itself was reduced from 160+ species to 32 species. Here is a lovely overview of the new names:
