Newly Discovered/Described Species 2024

- The genus Crenicichla (pike cichlids) has been split into different genera. Many of these are kept in aquariums worldwide, so their names need an update from now on:

- Myloplus aylan & M. sauron are two new piranha species that are now split from the very famous black-banded myleus (Myloplus schomburgkii). That makes this species, which used to be extremely easy to identify, a lot more tricky. Myloplus sauron is probably the most common one in captivity now. It's literally named after Sauron from Lord of the Rings, because the stripe on the side resembles an eye.

- The genus Corydoras, the cory catfishes, has been split into seven different genera. This leads to a new name for hundred+ species & the near end of one of the most famous fish genera in the world. Corydoras itself was reduced from 160+ species to 32 species. Here is a lovely overview of the new names:

Here's an interesting story of a new species - a clearwing moth from Guyana, called Carmenta brachyclados, has been described. It was first discovered in Port Talbot, Wales, with two individuals having emerged from pupation from the mud stuck to the shoe of a professional photographer who had visited the country.
It was identified partly because the mud also held a fragment of seedpod from a Mora tree, as the Carmenta genus feed on seeds.

Liopholis aputja sp nov described from the Mann and Musgrave ranges. It was thought to be conspecific with L.margaretae which is now endemic to the Northern Territory but a 2005 study proved that it was a distinct species however, was not enough evidence to give it a full description. Now finally in 2024 it has been described.

MBARI just announced the description of the first known Deep-Sea Midwater Nudibranch: The
Mystery Mollusc (Bathydevius caudactylus). More than twenty years after it's initial discovery in 2000. It's bioluminescent too which is crazy.
(side note: I doubt we'll see it anytime soon at MBA since it comes from 1,000+ meters deep, but it would be insane if they can pull it off)
