Newport Aquarium Newport aquarium News

I'll be going next weekend for their birthday celebration. I was there a few weeks ago, the place is somewhat of a letdown but maybe a third viewing will change that.

As of this weekend the aquarium is adding a 5th species to its penguin exhibit: macaroni will join king, chinstrap, rockhopper and gentoo.

Get eye-to-eye with Mighty Mike and meet his new friends in the brand new Gator Alley Exhibit. At 14 feet and 800 pounds he’s the biggest, baddest gator in the country outside of Florida. Mighty Mike and his crocodilian friends are prehistoric predators that have outlived dinosaurs and represent some of the most rare and exotic species in the world.

A brand new exhibit designed to get you eye-to-eye.
The Gator Alley Exhibit has been specially designed to give you unprecedented viewing access to Mighty Mike. His habitat will let you get up close and personal and stare into the eyes of this amazing creature while the surrounding displays showcase his crocodilian friends from around the world.

One of the largest and most diverse collections of crocodilians in the country.
Gator Alley features one of the largest and most diverse collections of crocodilian species in the country and nearly half of all the crocodilian species in the world. American alligators like Mighty Mike are represented along with Orinoco crocodiles from South America, Morelet crocodiles from Central America, Siamese and Tomistoma crocodiles from Southeast Asia and a variety of Caiman alligators. You’ll discover how their survival has been threatened and how these prehistoric creatures have managed to survive.

The zoo is renovating it's Hidden Treasures of the Rainforest Islands exhibit and it will reopen on November 27th.

I was told today that Mighty Mike will temporarily retire as a travelling animal and will be at the Newport Aquarium for about 4 years.

Going further on Gulo's post: These White Alligators can be found in the Hidden Treasures exhibit that has been closed for almost two months.

There have been multiple changes spread throughout the aquarium, which means a new species list thread will be created.

Here are some of those notable changes:
-All of the empty Bizarre & Beautiful tanks have been filled and have been properly labelled.
-Located in the Rainforest, the median between the first exhibit and the lorikeet aviary has been removed (along with the birds). A wall says that the area will be renovated once again so that it can exhibit 22 animals. The white alligators Snowflake and Snowball are now in separate enclosures. One has replaced the otters, and the other has replaced the dwarf crocodile.
-The many medium sized crocodillians (Nile, West African, Morelet's) that were once in the tiny tanks have been replaced with either a new and smaller species, or juveniles.

Sweat Pea, the aquarium's first Shark Ray is pregnant, and it was confirmed that she is the first impregnated Shark Ray outside of the wild.
