Newquay has recently had a pair of six-banded Armadillos and Cusimanse arrive sometime later in the new year they will recieve the pair of male Red Titi`s from Shaldon
 
Hasn't Shaldon only just got their titi monkeys? Is Newquay zoo getting their cusimanses from Shaldon too, because they only arrived there in August I think
 
could Shaldon have been quarantining the said animals for Newquay?

No. Both species of animal were for Shaldon zoo. I did my work experience there before they arrived, but I know they were for Shaldon zoo to keep themselves.
 
The Cusimanse are 2 males from Shaldon,the Titis will move when Shaldon get their true pair in the new year.For the record the Cusimanse were quartined at Banham Zoo and the Red Titis at Twycross Zoo.

Munster Zoo. This is only the 2nd zoo in UK keeping them, Colchester being the other. They hadn't been exhibited in the Uk for probably 30+ years before Colchester got their group. The last place I saw them was at Belle Vue Zoo, Manchester and that closed in 1977.
 
Do flamingoland in Yorkshire not have any red capped mangabey, i'm sure i read somewhere they had imported them before Colchester, i know they have the grey mangabey.
 
As far as I know they have a pair of White-naped Mangabey which may have bred now. ISIS only list two zoos(Colchester/Newquay) having Red-capped in UK.
 
I saw more than one mangabey when I went late last year. They are not shown very well though. You can't get close to them at all. They get stressed easy.

I presume you mean Flamingo Park? You would have seen 'more than one Mangabey' as they have a pair plus(I think)one or more young one. But they're White-naped.
 
Lions

Its just been revealed that Kabir the male lion at Newquay zoo has been put down due to a broken leg. Its sad how the males don't seem to last long at newquay. In no way am i saying its down to the keepers at all but would it be better for Newquay and the female Connie if they stopped taking old males from Longleat and instead maybe got a younger male of low ranking in terms of breeding requirement??
 
That's sad. I couldn't figure why though, he was chosen to go to Newquay in the first place. as he had only been at Longleat a short while being sent from Port Lympne.
 
It seems that Newquay Zoo is the place to kill your lions off! Whose gonna send their old male lion there next?

They will probably get another male off Longleat probably, but isnt there only Charlie left at Longleat, or Kabir's younger sons left? Can't think of any other surplus males that could go to Newquay unless Woburn or West Midlands send out one of theres?

I don't understand why Newquay don't just participate in breeding the Asiatic lions and leave the Africans to the safari parks where they can be represented in a better pride system
 
The enclosure at Newquay is not realy set up for the breeding of Lions from what i`ve seen so using the place as a retirement home for old Africans saves having to put down a healthy animal after its past breeding age,and i for one hope Newquay keep to African Lions as it makes such a change to see them in a zoo.
 
I know it is nice to see the African lions in zoos, but (I think) they are better suited to safari park, where they are in more natural pride numbers. I mean, there are old lions in many uk safari park prides, and i just think Newquay could use their space more efficently for the Asiatics who need their numbers increasing in zoos.
 
Yes but their are only so many animals that can be housed in the Safari Parks,and the ones in the U.K must be near capacity,as for them keeping Asians at Newquay i would realy not like to see them do that as the enclosure is only about the size of Twycross enclosure and that is not realy big enough to me for keeping and breeding Lions of any species,any way Newquay does a lot of excellent breeding with lots of smaller mammals do they realy need to join the breeding program for Asian when they can give a good home to animals that would other wise BE PUT DOWN.
 
Newquay normally only exhibit one pair of African Lions and I don't think any blame can be attatched to the loss of male Kabir. Its only noteworthy as he hadn't been there very long. I believe he's only about the third male they've had in twenty or even thirty years or more. Its a perfectly suitable place for another surplus male to 'retire' to in due course.
